Amaris Aponte

Hi Amaris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography initially began as a mere hobby, but it quickly grew into something more profound. I found myself carrying my camera everywhere, capturing moments at shows, studio sessions, and occasionally even in the club. As someone who used to model, I discovered a newfound sense of liberation when I transitioned to being behind the lens. Shooting with film added an extra layer of excitement, as the anticipation of seeing the developed photos on my phone felt like unwrapping a gift filled with delightful surprises. Gradually, my skills improved, and I realized my true potential. Through networking and nurturing my passion, opportunities started arising, and people expressed a genuine interest in paying for my work. Initially, juggling my day job and photography proved challenging, as it seemed to encroach upon my availability.

Eventually, I made the courageous decision to pursue photography full-time, understanding that this was where my heart truly belonged. While I acknowledge there is still much to learn and a long journey ahead, I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. If you had asked a younger version of me if this would be my life today, I would have confidently answered with a resounding “no.” Yet, I am now filled with gratitude for the life I lead, eagerly anticipating the doors that photography will undoubtedly open for me in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a female photographer, I face various obstacles and challenges in a male-dominant industry. There have been instances where I felt that some people didn’t take me seriously, possibly due to their perception of me as a pretty girl. On sets, I constantly deal with being mistaken for one of the models rather than a member of the camera crew. However, I have had the opportunity to prove myself over time, demonstrating my hard work and dedication. While being a full-time entrepreneur has its ups and downs, pursuing my passion wholeheartedly is a choice I wouldn’t trade for any job.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have a unique ability to turn average settings into spectacular images, creating something out of nothing. What sets me apart is my exclusive use of film, setting myself apart from digital photographers. My artistic vision and keen eye allow me to capture beauty and emotion in ordinary scenes, transforming them into captivating photographs that leave viewers in awe. Embracing the timeless charm of the film adds authenticity and depth to my work, showcasing my commitment to craftsmanship and my ability to create extraordinary art.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For someone starting out in film photography, here’s some advice I would give: Believe in yourself, as nobody else will believe in you if you don’t. Embrace networking opportunities fearlessly, as you never know who might open doors for you. Remember to have fun with it; if it’s not enjoyable, it becomes difficult to sustain. Lastly, prioritize practice and consistency, as they are the keys to improving your skills and achieving success in this art form.
