Rising Stars: Meet Maryam Schwegman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryam Schwegman.

Maryam Schwegman

Hi Maryam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m the daughter of an immigrant family that came to America in 1978 from Tehran, Iran. The first stop was Savannah, GA, from 1978-1986, and then I landed in Atlanta in 1986, growing up in Roswell, Georgia, and a 1996 Chattahoochee High School Graduate from Alpharetta, GA. I went to Emory University, where I attained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and graduated in 2000. I went straight to bedside emergency room nursing in the inner city of Atlanta from 2000 to 2003. At the end of 2000, I also got my real estate license and began a career in Real Estate with Prudential GA Realty since my family business was in the building/new construction subdivisions/engineering. I learned from a very early age how to build homes, look at land assemblages, sell properties, and how to be a real estate investor. But, I also allowed my clinical career to grow in parallel. After my ER nursing, I grew in the corporate healthcare sector and became an executive for 2 Fortune 500 companies. I also attained my Master’s in Public Health in 2010. I was always a person that worked two full-time careers and thrived on it. My motto has always been, why do three things when you can do ten….ahahha….

Fast forward, I left my corporate healthcare career in 2017 when my youngest child turned one, and I wanted to attain more work/life balance now that I had become a mother of two. So, I went full steam ahead in real estate in 2020, and it was just in time to see the unprecedented market that none of us had ever experienced before. I was grateful for my tenure and my background to prepare me for the Real Estate Hunger Games we all experienced and continue to experience in the present, depending on the area. I’ve been a Chairman Level agent at Berkshire Hathaway for the past three years, a Top Producer for the Atlanta Realtors Association for the past three years, was voted by The Atlantan Magazine in 2022 as a Top 20 Influential Women of Atlanta and other real estate awards local within my brokerage/branch. On a personal note, I’m a wife of 20 years to my husband, David, and two beautiful babies, Cameron (9) and Hannah (7) and Wesley (Furry pup). I work hard for my family and friends, love to be charitable for Alzheimer’s Association, ALS, and SALSAL, and am still a nurse volunteer as I still hold an active nursing license. I’m an avid marathon runner (completed 17 to date) and love to travel! I’m 45 and just getting started, too!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, struggles should be there. That’s how you learn and get stronger. From being an immigrant, growing up in the lower-middle class most of my life, and having a couple of really intense personal health experiences/near-death moments, it all shapes who you become. The imprint of the struggles is what I embrace. I don’t allow a smooth road. I believe in reinvention and putting yourself out there to evolve. If you aren’t challenged or learning every week, then you are sentenced to a pretty dull life experience. You only get one life, so, live each day to the fullest is my motto.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m currently an active Realtor in the state of Georgia and have been licensed since early 2001. I also have an active Registered Nurse license in the state of Georgia since 2001 as well. My specialty in real estate is new construction/land assemblages and luxury resales/listings/buyers. I am most proud of my personal accomplishments with my family of four. My husband and two children. One way I differ greatly from many other realtors I don’t tie myself with a quota/business plan/numbers. The families I serve deserve way better than that. I keep my head down and grind out the role because it is one of the largest decisions a family will make, purchasing a home. If I continue to have a servant’s heart, the numbers will follow.

What does success mean to you?
Success is having a healthy balance in your personal/work life, giving back to others, and taking the time to be grateful for what you have. I’ve worked hard since I was 14 years old. Always employed and earning money. It makes me feel successful to give back and get paid for it. I pinch myself daily that I can do this.
