Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Dyson.
Hi Morgan, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed with your story and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in architecture started with my love for designing things. Whether it be art, clothing, music, or spaces around me; I learned how design can make someone’s space much better to experience.
What I value in architecture is the fact that it is a contribution to something way bigger than me. It lasts years beyond me and withstands the test of time. I have the opportunity to control and design where people live, eat, work, worship, etc. Being a part of that alone is a beautiful experience.
As a child, I spent a lot of my time sketching, so architecture is something that came easily to me. I grew up in a family that frequently traveled, so I always admired sightseeing buildings from all over the world. I decided at a young age that architecture was the profession for me.
I got my Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and Master of Architecture at The Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been a smooth road, but architecture is not for the weak. Architecture school was extremely time-consuming, and the courses were rigorous. But I got through! The profession is no different from that, an architect must acquire a wide variety of skills.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work as an architectural designer at an architecture firm in downtown Atlanta. Our specialties include automotive, mixed-use, residential, and education.
I am in the process of studying and testing to become an officially licensed architect. Being that there are only 0.4% of licensed black female architects, I make an effort to become a part of and increase that percentage. Representation is key to me; I would have loved to see people who look like me in this profession at a young age.
Once I get my license, I plan to focus on luxury residential homes and stage design. My sister, Mayah Dyson, is an artist and curates music concerts for local artists in Atlanta. She gives me the opportunity to design her stage for each show and it’s something that I grew to love!
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I spent a lot of time creating. I loved to work and play with my hands. I sketched, built things, and played with a lot of dolls. I fully believe that my passion for architecture and fashion design came from this.
