Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Elliott and Karimah Bowen-Elliott. They shared their story with us below:
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Bryan: Frequently, we’re asked about the inspiration behind launching The House of Artem, and we often find it challenging to pinpoint a single defining moment. In truth, it’s the culmination of our life’s journey and experiences.
Karimah would say her love affair with luxury started early; she was swept up by the charm of high-end fashion and fragrances during trips to Saks Fifth Avenue with her parents as a child. Those beautiful memories ignited a deep passion within her, especially for fragrances, turning her into the family’s go-to for scent suggestions and style advice.
During my childhood, a significant portion of my time was dedicated to immersing myself in art through literature and music. I often found myself lost in the captivating narratives spun by talented storytellers, allowing me to tune out my surroundings and drift away into their worlds.
During Karimah’s academic journey, she found a hidden love for chemistry, and she excelled in those studies. After completing her studies, she landed a role at an upscale boutique in Atlanta, immersing herself in the world of luxury fashion. This experience not only allowed her to explore high-end fashion but also provided her with a remarkable chance to curate looks for celebrity clientele.
After college, I relocated to NYC, where my career in some of the world’s premier fragrance houses began to flourish. While I admired their dedication to craftsmanship, I couldn’t help but notice a glaring absence. Unlike the culturally rich art forms that had influenced my upbringing, luxury fragrances lacked the recognition as an art form in their own right.
It was this moment that sparked my desire to reinvent the narrative behind fragrances, elevating them to the status of other established art forms. This meant not just viewing them as scents but as powerful mediums for storytelling and cultural expression.
So, what sparked the creation of The House of Artem? It emerged from the urgent need for the art of storytelling in a space where it had been clearly absent before. Our approach to telling culturally relevant stories through scent sparks dialogue and fosters understanding across generations and cultures. We truly believe where empathy is present, anything is possible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Karimah: Embarking on the journey of creating Artem has been an incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable experience. However, we must admit the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the most significant challenges we faced was securing financial backing from venture capitalists. It’s no secret that the statistics for funding women-led businesses and black-owned enterprises have been discouraging, with a noticeable decline in investments.
Navigating this terrain required persistent effort. We found ourselves knocking on numerous doors, emphasizing the unique value and vision behind Artem. Despite the undeniable profitability of the niche fragrance industry, it was crucial to connect with the right individuals who could truly grasp and support our vision. The process taught us the importance of resilience and the value of finding those who believe in the narrative we are crafting with the House of Artem.
Bryan: Well…aside from being a married couple in business together, she took the words right out of my mouth. LOL
Thanks – so, what distinguishes you from others or makes you stand out?
Bryan: What sets Karimah and me apart at The House of Artem? Well, for starters, it’s our unique blend of backgrounds and passions. Karimah’s love for luxury didn’t just begin yesterday—it’s been a lifelong affair rooted in childhood memories that shaped her into the fragrance aficionado she is today. As for me, I didn’t stumble into the world of fragrance by accident; it was a deliberate journey born from a deep appreciation for the arts and a desire to fill a gap I saw in the industry.
But beyond our individual stories, it’s our shared vision that truly sets us apart. We’re not content with just making fragrances that smell good; we want to make scents that tell stories. Our approach isn’t about following trends or sticking to the status quo—it’s about breaking boundaries and pushing the limits of what fragrances can be. By infusing our scents with cultural richness and depth, we’re creating something that goes beyond mere perfume; we’re creating experiences that resonate on a deeper level.
So, what makes us different? It’s our passion, our dedication, and our belief in the power of storytelling. At The House of Artem, we’re not just making fragrances; we’re crafting connections, one scent at a time.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Karimah: Growing up, I was a delightful blend of contrasts. On one hand, there was my adventurous, tomboy spirit, always eager to climb trees, go camping with friends, and explore every nook and cranny of nature. Then, there was my love for luxury and high fashion, which remains just as strong today.
When the adventurous bug bit me, you’d find me knee-deep in creek water or scaling tree branches. But when it was time for a touch of glamour, I’d raid my mother’s jewelry box, douse myself in her perfume, and play dress-up, imagining myself gliding into a gala like my parents used to.
Late nights were reserved for watching Lucille Ball with my best friend, discussing the latest fashion trends, and dreaming big. My personality was anything but subtle; I was known for my blunt honesty, which I attribute to my parents. I’d even strut into rooms, offering unsolicited fashion critiques to my unsuspecting relatives – a habit I didn’t realize was less than polite until my mother gently corrected me.
Reflecting on those formative years brings a smile to my face, as it shaped the vibrant, multifaceted person I am today.
Bryan: During my childhood, I was quite a mixed bag as well. While I immersed myself in books and music, getting lost in the worlds crafted by talented authors and musicians, sports also played a significant role in my life. I thrived on the rush of competition and the camaraderie of teamwork, whether swinging a bat in neighborhood baseball games, shooting hoops on the basketball court, or ruining my school clothes in recess football matches.
Alongside my love for the arts and sports, I was constantly inquisitive, often bombarding my parents with questions about seemingly trivial things. This blend of interests and curiosity shaped me into who I am today—a mix of creativity, competitiveness, and an ever-curious mind.
