Joscynthia’s journey began with a childhood passion for enhancing beauty and empowering others, nurtured through playful experimentation with dolls despite initial discouragement from pursuing a career in the beauty industry. Despite familial expectations to pursue traditional academic paths, she persevered, juggling college education and salon work to hone her skills and support herself as a single mother.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open one of the first state-awarded multi-cultural salons in Greenwood, South Carolina, earning recognition and accolades for her business acumen. However, her ambitions extended beyond salon ownership; driven by a desire to share her expertise, she embarked on a path of education, attending industry shows and working with top brands to deepen her knowledge and become a trusted authority.
A pivotal moment in her journey came when she set her sights on the film and television industry. Undeterred by the lack of formal training, she volunteered and worked tirelessly to gain experience, eventually becoming a sought-after vanity specialist known for her meticulous attention to detail and collaborative spirit on set.
Joscynthia’s commitment to excellence and innovation led her to pursue yet another avenue of impact: education. Drawing from her diverse experiences, she developed comprehensive training programs and workshops, including online courses, and her recent launch of an educational program and agency, SetWorkMasters, aimed at empowering aspiring beauty professionals with production functions, set etiquette, and the skillset to succeed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t always easy for Joscynthia. In 2020 alone, she faced several significant challenges, including the loss of family members, undergoing spinal surgery, and receiving a devastating diagnosis of breast cancer during the height of the pandemic. These hardships not only took a toll on her physical health but also disrupted her ability to work and forced her to undergo numerous medical treatments.
Adding to her struggles, she recently had to relocate due to her home being flooded out from a severe storm that ravaged Atlanta. Starting over in the midst of battling her disease was incredibly daunting, and it would have discouraged many. However, Joscynthia persevered, demonstrating her unwavering resilience and determination to keep moving forward despite the obstacles in her path.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I learned during the Covid-19 crisis was the importance of utilizing time spent alone to propel myself forward for when I could be active again. Despite facing challenges such as spinal surgery and a diagnosis of breast cancer during this tumultuous time, I used the opportunity to develop a course, deepen my knowledge through journaling and reflection, and rely on my experiences to catapult me forward once I recovered. I embraced continuous research and kept my mind busy, even through virtual means like Zoom calls, and remained willing to help others however I could. This experience reinforced the importance of resilience, adaptability, and perseverance and underscored the value of leveraging every available resource to keep moving forward, even when the world seemed to stand still.
