Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Jian.

Joanne Jian

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi! I’m Joanne, a recent graduate fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design.

My journey into motion design goes way back to high school, where I made a gutsy move from mathematics to the arts. That’s where I found my love for graphic design, which became my major in college. College was a period of exploration for me – from delving into typography to experimenting with package design. It was during this time that I stumbled upon motion design tucked away within a web design program. Despite it not being a formal course initially, it lit a fire in me.

Fast forward to my senior year in college, I made plans to study motion graphics in the States, but the pandemic intervened, postponing my plans. However, in 2022, I seized the opportunity to pursue my M.A. degree in motion media design at SCAD. This experience not only enhanced my skill set but also deepened my understanding of the industry’s workflow and the invaluable connections within the community.

Looking back, every step in my journey was a dot waiting to connect. And they all did, leading me to where I am today – a passionate motion designer. Steve Jobs’ iconic quote, ‘You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.’ His words truly resonate because, at every turn, I trusted in the journey, knowing that each experience and choice would ultimately lead me to where I stand today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

Transitioning from mathematics to the arts in high school was a leap of faith that definitely had its moments of doubt. I questioned a lot whether I was making the right choice. However, it was in those moments of uncertainty that I discovered my passion for creativity and design.

Discovering motion design during my graphic design program in college felt like uncovering a hidden gem in a sea of possibilities. It required exploration, experimentation, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Then, just as I was gearing up to study motion graphics, the pandemic hit, and my plans got postponed.

Each challenge taught me something valuable, whether it was about resilience, adaptability, or just trusting the process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a freelance motion designer specializing in collage and vector illustration animation, I find myself particularly drawn to projects that stretch creative boundaries, allowing me to craft visual stories that aim to captivate. Through my journey, I’ve developed a diverse skill set and cultivate a keen eye for detail. This allowing me to approach projects with a fresh perspective and a willingness to adapt to new challenges. I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way thus far and look forward to the possibility of contributing my skills and expertise to future projects.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always that curious kid, constantly poking around and exploring everything. I loved getting my hands dirty with creativity, spending hours drawing, painting, and trying out different artsy stuff. My interests were all over the place. I’d go from tumbling around in gymnastics to swinging a racket in tennis and then dive right back into the arts and literature. But you know what really hit the spot? Art. It was my go-to. Whether I was sketching, painting, or just doodling, it was my way of letting loose and expressing myself. It was like my little escape from the chaos of the world.
