Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikkia Nelson.
Nikkia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating college with a degree in Biology I made the move to Atlanta from South Georgia. Here I worked in the science field but wasn’t satisfied. After being fired from my laboratory job, for no reason…I had to make a life decision. I had to decide if I would a toss-up between continuing my education in the field Dentistry or take a total leap of faith to pursue cosmetology. Cosmetology won out. Once I finished cosmetology school working under my cousin’s tutelage I really learned the art of hair. Several years and a few salons later…I decided to open my own salon. I learned so much from working for some of the best salons in Atlanta. N’Seya Salon and Spa was one of those salons that really taught me the business of hair. I took those lessons and now own one of the most successful ethnic salons in Atlanta.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road by far. Opening a salon on your own in a 2000 square ft. space in the heart of downtown Atlanta is by far a challenge in itself. And trust me I had my share of challenges. From contractor issues to financing to hiring quality hair stylists. I’ve been thru it all. Patience and perseverance got me through a lot, and has allowed me to flourish and really enjoy the journey.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pressed Natural Hair Care Salon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a full service natural hair salon. We specialize in all things natural. 90% of our clientele are women who don’t chemically straighten their hair. We also provide extension services, custom color, construct custom wigs as well as full lace wigs, and provide a number of lengths and textures of hair extensions.
I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to build my business from the ground up, with the help of some amazing stylists. One who has been with me since the day we opened our doors seven years ago.
What sets us apart is the fact that we offer in salon services but also have a mobile salon truck where we can come to you. I’m so excited that we were able to acquire our mobile salon a year ago and it’s spectacular. We can’t wait to provide more mobile services to our salon clients as well as television and movie productions.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Actually we are looking to expand Pressed. A lot of our clients want us to expand to the suburbs of Atlanta. So we are seriously considering a Pressed West!
Also we have an amazing product line in the works. Utilizing my science and hair background, I’ve been working with a chemist for about a year and half to develop amazing products for men and women of color.
