Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Corcuera
Hi Maria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Mexico and now live in the US after living in Germany and Spain.
I’ve always loved making desserts, especially making them look pretty. I really got into baking in Germany, where I started a blog about all kinds of food. I shared my baking adventures and recipes, and along the way, I learned a lot about food photography and creating recipes. Later, I closed the blog to focus more on my family and an online jewelry business, where I first picked up photography skills.
Fast forward three years and many new flavors later, the pandemic hit in 2019 while we were living in the US, and Sweet Fix Baker was reborn. Sweet Fix Baker is a baking blog packed with sweet recipes, from indulgent treats to healthier options. You can check it out at www.sweetfixbaker.com.
This is now my full-time job! I specialize in recipe development and photography of any bakes and desserts; I love working with brands, helping them with product awareness through desserts and photography.
Since then, I’ve done multiple food photography courses, artificial light, and a certification in Digital Marketing and Social Media, to further expand my knowledge and provide a better service to my clients and readers. I’ve worked with national and International brands, developing recipes and doing dessert photography and videography for them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our family has moved a lot, and having a job where I didn’t have to start all over again after each move was challenging. With this job, I only need my equipment and a home studio to make it work, no matter where we are. This setup is perfect for me in our situation, although we’re planning to stay in Atlanta for a longer period of time.
It’s been a steep learning curve for me. I’ve had to learn a lot, not just about photography, videography, and editing, but also about using natural and artificial light, social media, marketing, managing a blog, and even some law to understand contracts and licensing.
I’ve taken many courses, had numerous discussions with mentors and my lawyer, and there’s still so much more to learn!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
There are many food photographers out there, but I specialize in dessert photography, videography, and recipe development exclusively. What I’m most proud of is working with international brands I’ve known my whole life—brands I grew up with and never imagined I’d be collaborating with. To work with these brands, it’s not enough to be a good photographer, videographer, and recipe developer. You also need to provide excellent service, engage professionally, and understand their needs to help them succeed.
My international background gives me a unique creative perspective. I love fusing different flavors in my desserts and incorporating elements I’ve loved from each country I’ve lived in into my photography and videography.
I’m also very persistent. Running a self-owned business comes with many challenges, and it’s easy to give up. But I believe that constant failures are what help you learn and grow. You just have to stick with it and be open to change.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has definitely played a big role in my life and business, both in positive and challenging ways. On the bright side, I’ve been fortunate to meet some incredible mentors and collaborators who’ve guided and supported me. My husband has also been a huge source of support, helping me pursue this business and navigate the ups and downs. Moving to different countries also brought surprising opportunities, like how my time in Germany sparked my passion for baking and led me to start Sweet Fix Baker.
There have been tough times too. Constantly moving meant dealing with uncertainty and having to adapt quickly. The pandemic was especially challenging, but it also gave me the chance to re-energize and focus on Sweet Fix Baker, turning a difficult situation into a fresh start.
I think luck is really about being open to new opportunities and staying strong through tough times. While luck has played its part, hard work, determination, and a willingness to keep learning have been key to shaping my business and life. Embracing both the ups and downs has helped me turn challenges into opportunities for growth.
