Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Day

Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve had a passion for technology for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I was always fascinated by video games, and I spent hours connecting gaming systems, setting up sound systems, and troubleshooting any electronic devices I could get my hands on. That early interest laid the foundation for my future in tech. As I got older, I became interested in cybersecurity—specifically, the idea that someone on the other side of the world could hack into your system without you even knowing who they are. That concept really grabbed my attention, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in protecting systems and data.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Information Systems with a focus on Cybersecurity Management, along with several cybersecurity certifications. Today, I’m a Cybersecurity Engineer at a Fortune 500 company, where I work to analyze and prevent cyber threats. Along the way, I’ve also become passionate about mentoring individuals, particularly in the Black community, who are getting started in IT and cybersecurity. It’s rewarding to give back and help others break into the field that has shaped my career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not, it has not been a smooth road. I’ve faced multiple challenges breaking into the cybersecurity industry. It can be a tough field to enter, and early on, one of the biggest obstacles I encountered was simply trying to land my first job in cybersecurity. I went through a series of rejections from employers, which was discouraging at times. Despite having the qualifications, there were moments when I felt like I was hitting a wall, but I knew I had to stay persistent.

Another challenge I’ve faced, and one that isn’t often discussed, is working in environments where I was one of the few people of color. Navigating those situations could be difficult at times, but I made sure to keep it professional and used these experiences as opportunities for personal growth. Rather than letting them discourage me, I embraced them as moments to develop not just as a cybersecurity professional but as a person.

I’ve always embraced challenges, viewing them as chances to learn and evolve in my career. Whether it’s rejection, adversity, or difficult circumstances, I’ve learned to see them not as setbacks, but as stepping stones to get to the next level. Adversity is a part of the journey, and it has certainly helped shape who I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Cybersecurity Engineer, with a focus on Third-Party Security, Risk Management, and Incident Response. My role primarily revolves around working with the various companies partnered with my employer. I’m responsible for analyzing and scanning their infrastructures to identify potential risks or vulnerabilities. If I discover any risks—such as weaknesses within their systems that could be exploited by hackers—I work closely with those companies to notify them and guide them in remediating those vulnerabilities.

In addition to risk identification, I also handle cyber incidents. When a cyber attack occurs, my role is to investigate how the threat actors gained access, assess whether any data was breached or stolen, and collaborate with the team to mitigate the impact. This aspect of my work requires both technical expertise and quick decision-making, especially when addressing a live incident.

Outside of my professional responsibilities, I’m also a tech coach. I enjoy helping others break into the Information Technology field, and I am particularly passionate about assisting Black individuals who want to enter the cybersecurity industry. Mentoring and coaching have become a significant part of my journey, as I want to empower the next generation of professionals.

On a lighter note, I’m also a fashion model on the side. I’ve had the opportunity to model for celebrity designer Miguel Wilson, and I enjoy dressing up in sharp, tailored suits when I can. It’s a fun contrast to my work in cybersecurity, and it gives me a creative outlet outside of tech.

What sets me apart is my ability to balance my technical expertise with a strong focus on collaboration and mentorship. I take pride in not only protecting infrastructures from cyber threats but also giving back to my community and inspiring others to pursue their own paths in technology. I’m proud of the impact I’ve made both in the cybersecurity world and in helping others achieve their goals.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d like to share with your readers that if you’re going through a difficult time or facing a storm in your life, it’s going to be okay. Storms aren’t meant to break us, but to build us up. God allows challenges to come our way to remind us to lean on Him, to help us grow, and to strengthen our faith. Every one of us faces tests in life, but those tests are meant to shape and mold us into stronger, better individuals. However, it’s important to not go through a test without learning the lesson it brings—otherwise, you’ll end up repeating the process.

No matter what you face in life, always keep God first in everything you do. Trust in His plan, because He’ll never leave you nor forsake you. Life’s challenges are just opportunities for growth, and with faith, you can overcome anything.
