Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Luke
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
I am an artist, author, and musician. I have always felt creative output is one of life’s greatest forms of expression and therapy. Since I was very young I found great joy in making art, music, and writing it has gotten me out of many bad situations or prevented me from going into a life of trouble and yet it has gotten me into many great situations, social circles, and great opportunities.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In any profession, the road is rarely smooth or easy and the thing about that is none of the things worthwhile are. You have to develop your skills and hone your craft when things are difficult. As an artist in every form, whether it be music, drawing, or writing, we face constant obstacles in technology always out to replace our creativity to dumb things down or make talent generic. We make music and spend so much money in a studio to ultimately give it out for free and end up always at a financial loss. The same can be said for artwork, with AI being out to take over everything graphic designers like myself and many others have worked so hard for. The main thing I know is if you don’t love these things with immense passion you will quickly find your way to another profession. But these obstacles aren’t there to keep us out, they are there to show us if we want something bad enough we will find a way through it.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a musician first and foremost. I have 4 solo albums out and am working on my fifth at the moment. My music has been streamed over 500,000 times across the globe. I am also in a band called Reach For The Sky which is soon to release our 4th album as well. I do over a hundred live shows a year and find music to keep me busiest of all the other creative ventures I am involved in. My day job is as a graphic designer and visual artist. I also have written and illustrated 4 books.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I think that being bold enough to think outside the box is something more people need to keep in mind. It is fine to be influenced by people but everyone follows trends and by the time you catch a trend it is over. So instead of following others, it is the best practice to find your niche and keep things interesting. I tend to use humor to make things relatable and bring people together. It loosens people up to understand whatever message you are presenting in your art when you have your audience comfortable.
