Meet Zel X of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zel X

Hi Zel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a first-generation Ghanaian-American born in Atlanta, GA, and music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a musical household, with my elder brother and sister singing and playing in church, I naturally developed an ear for music. I started with drums, moved on to bass guitar, and eventually found my passion in playing the guitar.

In 2019, I took things to the next level by diving into songwriting, production, and engineering, using programs like Pro Tools and Logic Pro. As I honed my craft, I was heavily influenced by legendary Ghanaian artists like Dasebre Dwamena, Kojo Antwi, and R2Bees, as well as Canadian artists PartyNextDoor and Brent Faiyaz. These artists shaped my sound, fueling my love for Afrobeats, Highlife, and R&B.

In 2021, a major opportunity came my way when my big cousin Kofi connected me with DJ Ecool. That connection led to me opening for Davido and Ecool at Center Stage in Atlanta, marking my official integration into the Atlanta Afrobeats scene.

Beyond my personal music journey, I also co-created a collective called SOLU, which has opened for and worked with artists like Joeboy, Asake, and Kwesi Arthur. Our goal has always been to go global, and some of the most rewarding moments have been seeing these major artists hear our music for the first time and be amazed.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t been completely smooth, but every challenge has been a learning experience. As an independent artist, I’ve had to wear multiple hats—handling branding, marketing, and the business side of music while staying focused on my craft. Balancing everything, especially content creation, has been a challenge, but I’ve learned to adapt and find ways to stay consistent.

Breaking into the industry also requires more than just talent—it takes strategy and persistence. I’ve had to put myself in the right spaces, build relationships, and make sure my music speaks for itself. It’s all part of the process, and I embrace it because I know the work I’m putting in will pay off.

At the end of the day, I’m committed to my vision. Every challenge is just another step toward where I’m headed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an independent Artist/Producer based in Atlanta. My work is all about blending Afrobeats, Highlife, and R&B, creating a unique sound that connects with listeners. I specialize in producing my own tracks, as well as writing and performing them, which allows me to have full control over my creative process.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to create music that feels authentic and resonates with people on a personal level. What sets me apart is my versatility—I’m not just an artist, but a producer who shapes every aspect of my sound. This allows me to push creative boundaries while staying true to my roots.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I probably use YouTube more than any other app because most of what I’ve learned throughout my music journey has come from “YouTube University.” I’m also really into podcasts, especially ones like Audionerds, that dive deep into music production and creativity.
