Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Sima
Hi Paula, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Paula Sima, originally from Tanzania, has journeyed through various countries, shaping her into a global citizen with a passion for travel and exploration. Her adventurous spirit and willingness to take risks has been central to her personal and professional growth.
In 2020, during a period of personal struggle with depression and the isolation brought on by the global pandemic, Paula sought an outlet to express herself and connect with others. This led to the creation of her podcast, “Talk Shit With P” (TSWP), envisioned as a safe space for open conversations about mental health and personal experiences. Through TSWP, Paula shares her own mental health journey and provides a platform for others to voice their stories, fostering a community of authenticity and support.
Paula’s commitment to mental health advocacy is deeply personal, stemming from her own battles with depression. She emphasizes the importance of owning one’s story, believing that sharing experiences can help others feel less alone in their struggles. Her approach is characterized by unapologetic authenticity, aiming to uplift her community and promote positive energy.
Throughout her journey, Paula has faced challenges related to identity and belonging, especially as an immigrant navigating life in different countries. Despite these obstacles, she remains resilient, drawing strength from her support system and her faith. Paula’s story is a testament to the power of vulnerability, community, and the relentless pursuit of one’s passions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth?!? HELL NO!! Paula’s journey has been marked by significant challenges that have shaped her path. As an immigrant, she has often grappled with feelings of isolation and questions about her identity and belonging. Navigating life in different countries, away from her family, has intensified these struggles, leading to moments of self-doubt and contemplation about her place in the world.
In 2016, Paula faced a profound personal battle with depression, which led her to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. This period was pivotal, as it not only reconnected her with her faith but also ignited her passion for mental health advocacy. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further exacerbated her mental health challenges, intensifying feelings of isolation and leading to increased alcohol consumption and decreased appetite. However, this challenging time also served as a catalyst for action. Encouraged by her manager, Angela, Paula channeled her experiences into creating the “Talk Shit With P” podcast, transforming her struggles into a platform for open dialogue and support.
Throughout her journey, Paula has encountered systemic barriers, particularly as an immigrant striving to establish herself in new environments. These challenges have been compounded by the absence of a physical support system, as her family resides far away. Despite these obstacles, Paula’s resilience and unwavering commitment to authenticity have propelled her forward. She emphasizes the importance of owning one’s story and surrounding oneself with a supportive community, believing that sharing personal experiences can foster connection and healing.
In essence, while Paula’s path has been fraught with difficulties, her determination to confront and share her struggles has not only facilitated her own healing but has also created a safe space for others to explore and discuss their mental health journeys.
Support, Financial difficulties, Immigrant and depression have all been part of the struggle on this journey.
