Life and Work with Malibu Darby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malibu Darby.

Malibu, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been extremely passionate about makeup, hair, and beauty in general. From 9 years old, when I would tag along with my aunt who was a Mary Kay Representative, I knew that makeup was something that I loved.

Over time, this grew into a full-fledged obsession with all things beauty. Once I moved to Atlanta in 2013, this love had the opportunity to flourish. More than just a shallow hobby makeup and beauty as a whole became a true escape.

After hours of watching from the sidelines and enjoying the work of my peers, I created my own Youtube channel. It took about a year of doubt, hesitancy, and trial runs before I officially started the Malibu Darby brand. Since then, we have quickly grown to reach over 1000 subscribers and 35,000 views. What started off as a hobby, and personal escape for someone working in corporate America has quickly become a major part of who I am.

Malibu Darby is all about real people, with busy schedules and responsibilities but who still love feeling beautiful and indulging in glamour. As an African American woman, I immediately found my niche of women who are just like me. Focusing on beauty can mean exploring diversity in beauty brands, learning about new advances in hair, or teaching people how to get more by spending less. My brand is still evolving but the growth thus far has been so exciting.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has been enlightening and enjoyable. Putting yourself on camera, in front of strangers, and being truly vulnerable can be a little frightening. You learn a lot about yourself. I couldn’t help other people until I truly found that beauty in myself. Social media has really exploded in the last few years so navigating that isn’t always easy. This is just the beginning of the road but I’m excited for any twists and turns that may come.

My advice is, as cliché as this is, JUST DO IT. Sit down and do it. Stop waiting and reasoning on why next week, next month, next year is a better time. Had I waited until everything was “perfect”, I’d still be waiting.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a YouTuber and beauty enthusiast, I pride myself on keeping it simple. I’m a brown girl who loves makeup and hair. I have a 9-5 corporate job. I have a busy life and understand the day to day beauty dilemmas. There’s a community of regular girls who LOVE beauty. We keep up with the newest products. We stand outside the store before it opens. We wear a full face of makeup and spend hours on our hair because we just love the art itself. Sometimes the products are pricey. Sometimes the brands don’t make products in our shade. Sometimes we get it wrong because we aren’t professionals. But there’s something that beauty does that is fun for us and that’s what I’m about.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Other YouTubers are my biggest resource. Watching other videos can teach you so much about the art of connecting and being yourself. If there’s a dilemma your facing or if you’re in a rut, I can guarantee someone else has been in the same situation and made a video about it.
