Today we’d like to introduce you to Celeste Barker.
Hi Celeste, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well I was born and raised in New York and I lived there until I was about 22 years old. My mom had me at 43 and my 2 sisters are about 19 years older than me so me and my nephew grew up as brother and sister. I grew up going to church and then of course when you get a certain age you start to “smell” yourself. I wound up getting pregnant my last year in high school and i was not about to let that stop me. I grew up in the projects and always wanted more for myself. So I had my son Darius is April and still walked across the stage in June.
While I was figuring out what I wanted to do of course I lived with my mom and she helped as much as possible until i was able to get a job on my 18th birthday at a steak house in east New York ….:Boulders Creek. Darius’s dad and I were high school sweethearts but that didn’t last and I started going to school for medical assisting and paid for that with my waitress money. I wound up starting a relationship with someone a considered a friend and moved down south to Columbia South Carolina. Me and my son took the bus being that he was already there and i stayed there until I joined the military. While there I worked as a medical assisting/ phlebotomist for a few hospitals and ended at American Red Cross as a platelets collection specialist. One day at a blood drive on base at fort Jackson, a donor who was a recruiter told me about the navy and how i would be able to get my nursing degree for free so I started the process. Ok so let me back up a bit ….my goal was to be an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist. So this was up my alley, but i wanted to make sure that I was not sent away often being that I had my son. I was also married at this point …. Still legally married (lol ) but I knew my roll and responsibility to my child. So i got to bootcamp after surviving a very stressful and abusive relationship and what do i do when i get out…. Allow him to follow me. Any way I enlist as a master at arms which is basically law enforcement for the navy and they actually end up allowing me to get full retirement early because of a skin condition ( hidradenitis) but before i left i was able to get my property management license, real estate license and my associates. When it comes to my skin condition I try to advocate for those going through the same thing as well and create content for that, not as much as I would like though. So back to the military, I was never afforded the time to go to nursing school but I still love the military and think it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was able to finish my BA in finance as well and I even became a day trader along the way. After about 8 more years of being in California I was ready to come back to the south ( I love the south) and so i took me and my children and left. Never actually did a walk through of my home didn’t even know what i was going to do next but i left. I was an uber driver first because I had no car and then i became a Cobb county sheriff but that became difficult with the hours and now I am a financial advisor . My story still is being written but this is a over view of some of it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t but like my mom says many are the afflictions of the righteous but God beings them out of all of them. From being a teenage mom, to being in an abusive relationship from 19-33, completing all of my studies while active duty in the military. This was very hard. I learned that I had to do it myself and get it done with no excuses because people are not obligated to help you, they are not responsible for you, and it’s always someone in a worse situation. If i have all of my limbs and able to think speak and view things I am blessed !
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I work with Northwestern Mutual as a financial representative. Northwestern Mutual is a trusted name in financial services, with over 165 years of history helping individuals, families, and businesses achieve financial security. Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we are a Fortune 100 company known for our financial strength, long-term stability, and a client-first philosophy.
We specialize in comprehensive financial planning that integrates **life insurance**, **investment strategies**, **retirement planning**, **wealth management**, **estate planning**, and **business financial planning**. Our planning process combines cutting-edge digital tools with the personalized guidance of real financial advisors, ensuring our clients get both data-driven insight and empathetic support.
I am most proud of the trust that this company has built over generations and the impact we’ve had on millions of lives. One of our most meaningful metrics is not assets under management—but how well we help clients weather life’s ups and downs. Our brand stands for integrity, long-term partnership, and a deep commitment to doing what’s right—even when it’s not the easiest path.
I am in this especially for my African American / minority community
Whether you’re just starting your financial journey, navigating a career change, planning for retirement, or building generational wealth,
I am here every step of the way. We believe financial planning is not one-size-fits-all—it’s deeply personal, and so is the relationship with your advisor.
We invite you to think beyond traditional financial products and see what’s possible when you have a dedicated partner invested in your goals not just your numbers.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Mentors are extremely important! Find someone that you want to be like or that is living the life that you want in whatever field it is and throw your pride out the window! Even if you need to pay for one do it ! It’s been extremely important for me in all of my endeavors and I’ve been mentioned more times in rooms that I’ve never walked in.
