Susan Robinson on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Susan Robinson . Check out our conversation below.

Susan , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of doula work, one thing that has been bringing me joy lately is furthering my education. I’m currently in school for sonography, with the goal of increasing access to quality care for women of color. It’s been both challenging and fulfilling, and I’m excited about the impact this next step will allow me to make in my community.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Susan, a birth doula and student, passionate about supporting women especially women of color, through every stage of their motherhood journey. I run my own doula practice where I provide compassionate, informed, and culturally conscious care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

What makes my work unique is my commitment to bridging the gap in maternal health care by offering emotional, physical, and educational support tailored to each family’s needs. Right now, I’m also furthering my education in diagnostic medical sonography so I can continue to make reproductive health more accessible and empowering for underserved communities.

My mission is rooted in advocacy, education, and the belief that every mother deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. Whether I’m walking alongside someone during labor or furthering my education, I’m constantly working to be a part of real change in maternal health care.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother taught me the most about work. After losing my father in a car accident at a young age, I watched her step up with strength, grace, and resilience. She worked tirelessly and selflessly to provide for our family, and in doing so, she taught me the true meaning of work ethic, determination, and perseverance. Her example shaped not only how I approach work but how I show up for others with commitment, care, and grit.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be:
“You are stronger than you think, and everything you’re going through is shaping you into the woman you’re meant to become. Be gentle with yourself, you don’t have to have it all figured out right now. Continue doing the work.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what really matters to me is loyalty, depth, and authenticity. I value meaningful connections over surface-level relationships. I’m fiercely protective of the people I love and passionate about the things I care about. I don’t just show up,I commit fully, whether it’s in friendship, work, or personal growth. My friends know I’m the one who will keep their secrets, fight for them, and always tell them the truth, even when it’s hard

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I showed up for others with love, purpose, and unwavering strength. That I created space for women. Especially women of color, to feel seen, heard, and supported.
That I lived with intention, poured into my community, and left behind more compassion, healing, and hope than I found. I want to be remembered as someone who didn’t just chase dreams, but made room for others to believe in their own too.
