JD Earby on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to JD Earby. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning JD, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Working on different productions has honestly been the highlight of my days. Whether I’m stepping in as a PA, AD, camera operator, or creative director, it’s always an amazing experience. I get to network with other creatives, pick up new skills, and continue sharpening my craft in production. Every project feels like both a learning opportunity and a chance to grow, and that constant growth is what brings me joy

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JD, and I’m a creator, director, and producer, and I run my own company, “Earby Studios”. My work focuses on creating spaces where stories, culture, and performance meet—whether that’s through live events, film, or visual storytelling. What makes Earby Studios unique is our ability to merge multiple creative mediums into a single, immersive experience, giving both artists and audiences something memorable to hold onto. Right now, I’m producing new seasons of Velvet Voices and the MELANIN Showcase, both designed to highlight underrepresented voices while delivering high-quality, cinematic production

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I think the part of me that’s acted mainly as a teacher has served its purpose. Over time, I’ve helped, encouraged, and pushed many young creatives, and that experience has been incredibly rewarding. Now, I want to focus more on my own work—the stories I want to tell—and use my platform to uplift others through my art. By doing that, I’m not only motivating others, but also sharpening my own skills and growing as a creative.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
For a long time, art was just a hobby for me—something I’d do when I was in a good mood or simply bored. But there came a point in my life when I was dealing with depression, and those happy moments felt like they were miles away. It was like being stuck in a storm with no sign of light. One day, I’d had enough and decided to pour everything I was feeling into my work. Piece by piece, I started to see my emotions take shape in ways that felt both honest and freeing. The more I created, the more I began to appreciate my skills—not just as a pastime, but as a lifeline. When I finally shared my work, the response was overwhelming. People connected with it, saw their own pain reflected in it, and found beauty in that shared experience. That’s when I realized my art could be more than self-expression—it could be a source of power, both for me and for others.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Earby Studios is my lifelong commitment, with the ultimate goal of building a creative legacy that stands the test of time. My mission is to produce work that’s timeless, intentional, and deeply rooted in the communities it serves. Whether the path is filled with supporters or I have to push forward alone, I’m dedicated to seeing this vision through. Creating something that inspires, empowers, and leaves a lasting impact isn’t an overnight process—but that’s exactly why I won’t stop until it’s achieved.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I’ll always wish I had started sooner. Looking back at my college years, I think about how different things could have been if I’d had the production knowledge, creative skills, and network I have now. With the friends I had—people willing to collaborate and create—we could’ve made some truly fun, if not amazing, work early on. That would’ve shaped my portfolio and creative lifestyle in ways I can only imagine today. While I can’t change the past, that realization pushes me to make the most of every opportunity now.
