An Inspired Chat with Marisa Leilani Mustard of Athens

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Marisa Leilani Mustard. Check out our conversation below.

Marisa Leilani, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. I like starting the morning with coffee and quiet. Then I wake up my daughter, take her to school and start my work day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marisa Leilani Mustard. I paint murals and functional art. I love combining art with everyday life pieces. I also think public art is so important and special to the community.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
Hands down, my father. He was a high school teacher when I was born and quit to start roasting coffee. He created a business out of his passion for something even though it would have been “easier” for him to stay there teaching.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Sometimes I miss working at the liquor store. I loved that job. I loved talking to customers and being able to leave work at work and not think about it once I got home. I would never trade my job to do it again but I do miss it some days.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I sometimes have to make myself get on social media because my job depends on it and feel like I may be a little quieter in person but in general, yes.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace on a beautiful fall day, when someone has asked me to paint an outdoor mural with little to no guidelines, then after work my daughter and I enjoy a few hours of finding arrowheads and pottery in the creek.
