We recently had the chance to connect with Dewy Ventura and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dewy, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Normal day for me at the moment consists of waking up early to do my morning routine. (stretching, reading scripture, checking emails)
Then getting the kids up for school and hanging out with my littlest 1 year old baby and my beautiful wife. I’m usually responding to messages and sending out invoices by 10-11am. After that I head out. If I’m not coaching the kids in Jiu-jitsu at 12pm. I help coach the kids at 5pm then adults at 7pm. I usually shoot our CholoMMA content a few days a week near or around the Jiu-jitsu academy. Evenings I’m home by 9-10pm on the days I’m training and days I’m not I’m home by 6 or 7pm for dinner with the family. (I schedule work trips, meetings, and vacations around my familys calendar. Usually travel multiple times a year.) Balance is the key!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, My name is Dewy Ventura with CholoMMA. I am part owner and an avid Jiu-jitsu practitioner. I produce and direct film and social media content along with my two business partners. I also run multiple businesses and non-profits in the Greater Atlanta area with my wife. I train and coach Jiu-jitsu under the tutelage of Professor Maajid Al Kush at Team Mongoose BJJ in Lawrenceville, Ga. CholoMMA is a unique brand that teaches self-defense techniques online with a comedic concept that blends Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) with street survival elements. We teach Jiu-jitsu in Character as Cholos “gangsters”. We are currently working on an instructional that we plan on releasing at the end of the year.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember training under a man who was older and Asian, and he taught us a few kicks. I remember hitting the pads and feeling very powerful because I could make the pads make a loud sound. And every time I would switch my hips and kick the pad, I felt powerful in that I could move it and create such a loud sound, definite. I was young. Then that’s when I first knew that I wanted to be a martial artist. I decided to join Team Mongoose BJJ five years ago and begin my Jiu-jitsu career now I feel powerful every day.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain when I realized I could use it to help others. I could let the light within me shine. So many people around me that were hurting and far from God. But I had tasted God in prison he sat with me during my 10 year bid and comforted me and purified my heart. I helped many men there and still do. I saw God move in a miraculous way even in those dark places his light shines bright. He uses people like me and you.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, Im as real and authentic as they come. Working with kids is a big responsibility they are watching us, and we have to lead by example. I am a father and husband, a mentor and coach. I’m first and foremost a Child of God, and so I have to be a good ambassador and representative of His Kingdom.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell others about how I overcame so much adversity and my circumstances and how I touched the world with the love of God that lives in me. I pray people will draw closer to Him and be saved because of it.
