We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kandus Johnson. Check out our conversation below.
Kandus, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
For me personally, I would say energy. Everything emits frequencies, whether they’re negative or positive. I am a firm believer in what you put out comes right back to you. Plus, energy never lies.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kandus Johnson and I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. I am a full time artist and I sell my work within a handful of stores, bars and restaurants. I also run a company called Sudnat Studios that hosts local pop-up markets for creatives and I also teach painting classes during the weekdays. I absolutely love inking but a close second is woodworking. I enjoy making weird characters that are humorous and colorful!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful was when I was a kid and my parents took me to Stone Mountain. We hiked to the top and watched the sunrise. To see how small everything looked, it was an incredible feeling. For a moment, I felt like I was above the world, like I could do anything. Hiking is still one of my favorite things to do.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: You are a powerful, talented force. Never give up. Keep going. Persistence is key.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
If you asked my closest friends what truly matters to me, they’d probably say: family, animals, nature, and equality. I’m incredibly close with my parents. They’re not just my support system, they’re my best friends. It’s rare to have a relationship like I have with them and I will never take it for granted.
I am also a HUGE animal lover. People think I do art markets to sell my art, but secretly I do it to meet all the fur babies.
Nature has always called to me, grounding me and reminding me of the bigger picture. Being in nature feels like a return to self. And just as the natural world deserves respect, so do all people. That’s where equality comes in. Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. It’s something I carry with me in how I create, interact, and show up in the world.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m either in my studio or out in nature, creating. There’s something grounding about having my hands busy and my heart engaged.
I try to create every day—not just for the sake of productivity, but because it’s how I process, connect, and give back. I can’t turn it off. There’s something deeply empowering about making things that make people smile. Knowing that something I’ve brought into the world can brighten someone else’s—it keeps me going.
Art isn’t just what I do. It’s who I am. And I never want to stop.
