Today we’d like to introduce you to Louis Quarterman.
Louis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I served in the United States Army for 4 years Active and 2 years Reserve. Once, I got out of the military I moved back to Florida. I moved to Ft Lauderdale where found a job which was something to make a little money. I then had to decide between being a correction officer or working for UPS. Both really wasn’t me for UPS was loading trucks and I felt being a correction officer I would be babysitting grown men. It hit me at that moment that my best friend who I have known before we started kindergarten was a cosmetologist so I felt it, he could do so could I and that’s I got into the hair industry.
That fearless thinking changes the trajectory of my life (granted I didn’t know it at the time). I knew I had money that I paid into the GI bill that I used to pay for my school. I moved back to Jacksonville FL where I attend FCCJ community college. My plan was always to move to Atlanta once I finished cosmetology school so I did just that. I moved to Atlanta on June 8, 1998. I found a job working for 5 stylists my second day in Atlanta where I learned so much basic tools that I still use today. I then took the state board becoming a licensed master cosmetologist. The journey was then set that you don’t make a lot of money in the beginning and you have to earn a loyal clientele. I can say where you start (at the first salon) is not where you will end up staying in your career.
I’ve worked a number of salon’s for various reason’s however, you take each opportunity as a teachable moment. I knew my destiny was greater than what I felt I had to give to each owner I worked for. I decided I had something I could offer to the Atlanta market so I did my business plan, found the capital to invest in my own business. Prior to owning the Louis Quarterman Salon, I had been part owner of a franchise called Fantastic Sams but the partnership wasn’t for me. I knew I had to find my own place of creativity to create it yourself. You have to create your own opportunities is what I’ve learned throughout this journey. Being a business owner is just not about the product or service that you provide but the people the people you hire.
Your team is the representation that speaks for your business. It definitely takes a team because you are only as good as those that make up your team. I wouldn’t be here without those that believed in me as well, as I in them.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road in life is smooth. The number of salons has been bad and good. Bad I would say because it didn’t work out for me there so I left. Every time you move you lose clients.
Good because I learned from other stylists as well, I learned more about me. I learned I needed to find a way to get my own salon so I won’t have to move again.
