Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Womack.
Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always excelled at writing. When I was a child, I won local awards for writing. During middle and high school, I wrote poems that I carried around in a notebook and recited them in a major school play called Lady M’s Cup O’ Soul. In college at Fort Valley State University, I hosted Open Mic Nights and performed spoken word in talent shows. I then went on to become an English teacher for 12 years, whereas the writing coach, I increased school standardized writing test scores. I had always wanted to write a book, but I allowed procrastination and fear to hold me hostage for nearly 10 years. Ironically, my 10th year in education, I knew that I wanted a way out… I knew there was more to life than to be overworked and underpaid only to go to work, go home, go to sleep, just to wake up and do it all over again. I got the kick I needed when I was pregnant with my second child and was being treated indifferently at work. While on bed rest, I finally wrote my book in 2 weeks and then I went on to self-publish it. A year and a half later, I turned that one book into a full-fledged publishing and consulting business as well as a membership community and my quit day at my job was May 24, 2018. My book was the bridge to my dreams and after 12 years of teaching and 3 degrees, I am now a full time and successful business owner.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely struggles. Along the way, I got married, divorced in less than a year of marriage, and had to rebuild my life for me and my then-newborn daughter. I went on to get remarried, have a blended family and another child. At times, it became challenging trying to juggle motherhood, being a wife, working full time, and building a business from the ground up- with a 1.5-hour commute to and from work each day and with no influencers, extra money, no one knowing who I was, or anything.
My advice is to utilize every single second of time that you have, be coachable, and be consistent.
You may have to sacrifice extra sleep, weekends out, and tv shows. I started and grew my business from 3am-6am and 9pm-11pm. Day in and day out. Show up even when things don’t seem to be working. Make pivots but don’t quit. And remain coachable. Connect with someone who has done or is doing what you want to do. Don’t be afraid to make an investment in yourself and in your business. And actually, use the strategies you learn.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pearls of Power & P31 Publishing – what should we know?
I am the CEO of P31 Publishing, where I specialize in assisting aspiring authors to write, self-publish their books, and create an impactful brand and business. I am also the founder of Pearls of Power, the premier faith-based personal and business development community for women working to take their faith, family, and business to the next level.
I am most proud of helping other women realize their dream of becoming authors where they can create impact as well as a new stream of income for themselves.
My authenticity sets me apart from others. I’m going to keep it all the way real and tell you exactly what you need to know so you can grow and improve from the inside- out.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel that the opportunities presented to women are endless. Statistics show that African-American women are the most educated group of people in the nation. With our knowledge and skills, we can work together, support one another, and literally create our own opportunities using the professional education obtained and knowledge gained from working in various careers.
Women have stories. So, many women are successful but hurting because they are silencing their voice and holding their stories hostage. It’s time to open up and share them so that we can heal ourselves, help one another heal, and excel in life.
