Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyasia Monroe.
Hi Nyasia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello Everyone! My name is Nyasia Monroe. I’m a singer, songwriter and entertainer based in Richmond,VA. I started singing at a very small age, 3 years old – alongside my mom in our family church. My Godparents were the Pastor & First Lady, also my babysitters! Haha! They had me singing every gospel song with my other cousins and church friends for as long as I can remember! My Grandfather is a musician as well, so music is just second nature to us.
At age 12, I released my first gospel song “Smile. This led me to release a few albums as a teen that netted me a number of accolades including three consecutive Stellar Award Nominations! I graduated from NYC’s AMDA Conservatory, majoring in musical theatre for college and shortly after starred in “Hairspray The Musical” and “Dreamgirls The Musical”. Since then, I’ve been performing with entertainment bands across the tri-state area, including The Attraction Band based in Richmond, VA recently. I’m also recording new music for the world to soon hear, including my newest R&B single “Love”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but if weren’t for those bumps – I wouldn’t be where I am today. I struggled with perfectionism, and confidence! Once you go to college for music & get out in the real world, you see that there’s so many amazing artist around you. Sometimes you can try to compare yourself. Eventually I had to learn to let go of the idea of being perfect or wanting to please or sound like everyone else. My music is MY music, and my voice is meant to help heal someone! Most of music is about self love, and confidence – I want other little girls to know how special they are and that you matter in this world!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After graduating from The American Musical Dramatic Academy in NYC, I attended Fortis College and received my Massage Therapy certification! I’m all about healing people, whether through music or wellness. I also am the Assistant Manager of a Spa – I wear many hats & I love it! I’m most proud of all of my accomplishments, wether big or small, this has all helped my life improve in numerous ways.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I hope to be touring the world performing my own music, branching it to TV & sharing my gift with others. Of course, the dream and goal is to be a household name! (:
