Rising Stars: Meet Monique Gill of Metro Atlanta, Georgia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Gill.

Hi Monique, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Moknowsbest from a personal need for creative expression and emotional understanding after my parents’ divorce. Storytelling became the space where I learned to process emotions and find my voice. Years later, while teaching middle school broadcasting, I saw that many students were carrying similar emotional experiences without the tools or language to express them.
What began as a personal healing practice evolved into a mission-driven organization that uses storytelling and documentary filmmaking to help youth express emotions, build confidence, and develop industry skills. Today, Moknowsbest produces original films, leads The Bluest Space Youth Film Intensive, partners with schools and community organizations, and is expanding its work through workplace training and an emerging certification program, growing toward a globally connected ecosystem rooted in creative expression, emotional awareness, and opportunity.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road has not been smooth.
Building this organization required stepping fully into my authority, often in the face of disbelief and limited support from family and peers. Along the way, I navigated periods of housing instability, including living in my car, industry-wide strikes that halted income, the loss of reliable transportation, and moments of deep personal betrayal and misrepresentation of my character.
These challenges demanded more than problem-solving. They required profound personal development. I learned to move beyond surviving in my mind and instead cultivate regulation, resilience, and resolution in my body. That inner work has been essential to sustaining leadership, maintaining clarity of vision, and continuing to build an organization rooted in integrity, emotional literacy, and long-term impact.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
With more than 20 years of experience as an independent filmmaker, I bring a multidisciplinary background that spans network television, documentary storytelling, and youth-focused developmental education. I specialize as a Documentarian, Film Confidence Coach, and Creative Empowerment Curator, combining technical filmmaking skills with emotional literacy and personal development.
Throughout my career, I have worked across multiple roles in film and television production, which has given me a holistic understanding of the industry, from concept development through execution. While exploring where I wanted to grow professionally, I discovered that my greatest impact consistently showed up in my ability to coach self-confidence and personal empowerment, not only with youth, but also with peers and seasoned creatives navigating their own growth.
I am most known for my ability to motivate authenticity in others and to create spaces where people feel safe to be bold, emotionally honest, and expressive in their storytelling. My work centers on helping individuals translate their lived experiences into meaningful creative output.
What sets me apart is my capacity to lead with compassion while remaining deeply committed and resolute in purpose. Even through personal and professional disappointment, I have remained open-hearted and steadfast in my mission to develop emotionally conscious youth. This blend of creative expertise, emotional intelligence, and unwavering dedication allows my work to move beyond instruction and into transformation.

What makes you happy?
There are a few ways to answer that. On the surface, what makes me happy includes getting my hair and nails done, enjoying a delicious meal made with love, going on new adventures, kitties, warm chocolate chip cookies, and sitting in rays of sunlight with a soft breeze.
On a deeper, soul level, what truly makes me happy is experiencing a sense of stability and safety within my body. It’s the quiet reassurance, both internal and external, that no matter how life evolves, I have the authority to pause, to listen, and to change my mind in ways that support my well-being. That embodied sense of agency allows me to show up grounded, creative, and fully present in both my life and my work.
