Today we’d like to introduce you to Nafisa Islam.
Hi Nafisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in pharmacy school, I struggled with the worst depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and eating disorders. One of the things I used to cope was fitness. Whether it was during a depressive episode, during the stress of exam week, or just reminding myself that I am stronger than my insecurities and fears, fitness really made a huge difference in managing my health and stress levels and in building my confidence. It was the thing that kept me sane when everything else went left, and the most consistent relationship I had. Right before I graduated from pharmacy school, I found myself in the worst car accident and depressive episode of my life. That is when I started introducing affirmations, breathwork, and meditation into my daily routine. All I cared about was feeling better, which led to the craziest shift of my life. I went from survival mode one day to thriving the next through incremental changes like gratitude journaling and walks. I healed myself from all my mental issues and through that I learned that wellness is not just red light masks, supplements & protein shakes, but your daily habits, what you eat, what you think, how you feel, and who you spend time with. My goal now is to share the holistic wellness approach & encourage people to understand that our health is deeply connected to every part of our lives and take care of themselves inside and out.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve definitely had many struggles on my journey, from not receiving support for the way I wanted to live my life to falling off my routines and habits that keep me afloat. I think the thing about wellness and becoming the best version of yourself is that it doesn’t always happen overnight, but you have to train yourself to think positively and to believe that you can overcome anything, whether that’s illness, family issues, or other troubles we deal with in our daily lives. No matter how bad it gets, you can come back to grounding principles and let them eventually lead you into calmer waters.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Align With Nafs LLC?
My brand is called Align With Nafs LLC – I started off as a trainer who created specialized workout and nutrition plans for clients ranging from those with autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and pregnancy. I’ve held corporate workshops on multiple different health topics and did live meditations. I’ve coached multiple people to become the best version of themselves by breaking out of old patterns and old habits and implementing new ones. I also hold workout classes with breathwork for a deeply healing experience. I use my medical knowledge to bridge the gap between mainstream medicine and wellness space, debunking things that are just myths and what is factual and science-based. I am not here to sell anything unnecessary or trending – my life mission is to give people the skills to heal themselves. Nafs in Arabic means the “self” – so it’s not about being a perfect person but becoming more of your true, authentic self.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I believe that family makes me happy, friendships, and deep connection. I think that’s the core of being well. You can have all the supplements, be the healthiest person alive but at the end of the day – one of the most critical components of happiness is community and that’s why I strive to make Align With Nafs not just a brand but eventually a community.
