Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Vermilyea.
Hi Abby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’d like to think I’m still “getting started,” though I’m so grateful for everything I’ve been able to do so far – and have had a whole lot of fun along the way! I was essentially posting as a “content creator” before that was really even a thing; I would post dancing videos on Twitter (of all places). I’ve also been making YouTube videos since fifth grade, many of which now live in the depths of my archives… My journey into content creation really started as a way to document my life, with the occasional collaboration here and there. Over time, it naturally evolved into sharing local recommendations, both while traveling and around the Atlanta area, which is what I mostly focus on today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sometimes it feels like I’ve missed the boat – like the golden days of content creation may be over, the market is oversaturated, and the algorithm is constantly changing. It’s easy to fall into the mindset of “if only I had started sooner,” but I’ve learned I can’t play that game. Instead, I’ve had to redefine what success means to me in this field.
To me, success means three things: (1) creating content I’m genuinely proud of, (2) speaking life into people, whether that’s business owners, other creators, or my audience (I love giving the occasional “big sister” advice), and (3) using content creation as a creative outlet while still staying present in real life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I highlight local spots wherever I am – Hawaii, Scotland, Atlanta, and everywhere in between. Sometimes it’s through an official collaboration, and other times it comes from having an organic experience I just can’t keep to myself. I love having the opportunity to highlight a business as if I were an extension of them and their team. My goal is always to make them look good while still being authentic and honest, which is why I only collaborate with businesses I truly love and believe in. In today’s world, where the influencer space can feel oversaturated, I pride myself in providing a mutually beneficial outcome – because at the end of the day, we’re both running businesses. When I recommend a restaurant and later have 15+ people tell me they tried it because of my content, I know I’ve done my job well (and introduced them to a really good local spot!).
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Every time I post these days feels like a risk… haha! Especially in the “building” stage I still consider myself to be in, you never really know how a piece of content is going to perform. In a day and age where everyone has an iPhone and a TikTok account, playing it safe doesn’t really cut it anymore. That said, I try to make sure the risks I take still align with my overall goals and creative strategy, not a random shot in the dark (although I definitely have a few stories like that, too). I think the biggest risk is being willing to put yourself out there consistently, even before you feel fully established.
