Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawson Duncan.
Dawson, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved music, picked up a guitar at 14 and learned “Colder Weather” within the day. Since then I’ve been all around Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina. I’ve met some of my best friends on the journeys I’ve had far and wide. For a while I played whatever was offered to me, just happy to play in front of anyone really. Got a few bar gigs on the weekends playing covers and was in a few crappy bands too. At one of those bars I had been givin some good advice. “You don’t need them, only yourself”. As selfish as it may sound what I wanted at the time and what I needed to do were two completely different things. I wanted a band just to say I had one, didn’t matter who was in it or how good they were. Explains why I didn’t get too far with those guys. What I needed to do was to be as good as I could be. So I got to work. Writing and practicing for hours on end each day chasing a sound that I once thought unobtainable for myself. We’re getting closer, the ladder is pretty damn tall and I’m only on the first few steps up, but it’s better than being all the way at the bottom.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth as sandpaper. I had to make some very tough decisions about who I wanted to play with, kicked a band mate out of my house, had to cancel my first tour because I got hit with probation. There’s been a lot. The road ain’t smooth, and I’m still on it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I play guitar and sing, I’m a little bit like everyone but a whole lot like myself.
How do you define success?
Being able to cloth and feed you and your family, have a couple gibsons on a stand, and enough money left over for some cold beer.
