Today we’d like to introduce you to Tris Marie Sutherland.
Hi Tris Marie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started over from the ground up during one of the hardest seasons of my life in my 30’s. I found myself as a single mom who suddenly had to rebuild everything from scratch. It would have been easy to give in to that feeling of defeat, but instead I went back to college for media production and theatre while raising my kids and figuring out where my life was leading me next.
What started out as a way to get more of an education, quickly turned into purpose. I stepped into the entertainment industry (which seemed to welcome me with open arms), modeled for USA Today bestselling book covers, booked a reality TV show on the Travel Channel (which is still to this day my favorite audition I’ve ever done), and eventually won a Best Supporting Actress award after the covid lockdown period. Opportunities I never would have imagined began to open up for me.
From there, I took my creativity and storytelling skills into real estate. At first I wasn’t sure how my theatre training would translate to real estate, but I eventually realized that buying and selling homes is an emotional process…
every family, every move, every chapter has a story, and I realized my background in media helped me market properties and tell these stories in a completely different way. Over the years, I built a brand centered around authenticity, resilience, and helping people feel seen.
Now, I’ve just picked up my broker license as well, which was another deeply meaningful milestone for me, because it represents my grit and my ability to never give up.
When I set goals, I achieve them. It’s a strength of mine.
There were obstacles, delays, and moments where it certainly would have been easier and more fun to quit, but I refused. I worked through every difficult moment and made it to the other side, and the same way that I fought for myself, is the same way that I fight for my clients.
My story has never been about overnight success.
It’s about rebuilding, reinvention (no matter your age), faith, grit, and refusing to let difficult seasons define the ending of my story.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Going back to school later in life while balancing parenting and working was a challenge on its own, but stepping into entertainment and real estate also came with plenty of rejection, criticism, and a lot of pressure to prove myself.
In a way, all of the rejection actually helped me though.
In Real estate, people often only see the wins, but behind the scenes there are long hours, uncertainty, and a lot of perseverance required to keep going when things are slow or challenging. Earning my broker license was another reminder that growth often comes with obstacles first.
I think you have to learn how to keep believing in yourself even when not everyone around you understands the path you take, and if you’re hearing negativity, you do have to learn to block that out and keep moving forward. I think people mean well, but sometimes they try to put limits on you, like “are you sure you should be doing that maybe you’re wasting your time” because they know that they would not be able to succeed in doing what you’re trying….
But looking back now, every difficult season strengthened me, sharpened me, and taught me how to keep moving forward even when life felt uncertain, and I’m hopeful that seeing what I’ve gotten through can help others realize that they are more capable than they may realize. You lose 100% of the chances that you don’t take after all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work has sort of evolved in maybe an unconventional way because I tried to separate the creative part of me from business at first, but I realized I thrived a lot more when I married those two together.
I’ve now built my brand on cinematic storytelling, creating marketing that makes people feel something instead of them just scrolling past another “just listed” post.
I find that people connect more deeply when there’s emotion and story involved, and that’s why I try to bring that into my work. If you look on y0ur “feed” and see what’s trending right now, you’ll see that to be true.
I’m also passionate about teaching and helping others grow creatively.
I host trainings and workshops for real estate agents on social media, video marketing, branding, and content creation, and really a lot of what I teach applies to any business.
My passion for helping people eventually expanded into writing. I released my first book for home sellers last year, and recently launched a second book for buyers that reached #2 on the Amazon’s Best Seller list.
For me, the books were never just about sales, I wanted to create something that empowers people, something I wish I had when I bought my first home, and makes real estate feel less overwhelming whether you use an agent or not.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I rebuilt my life and career from nothing while staying true to who I am as a creative.
I didn’t fit into the traditional box, and for a long time I worried that was a weird, but I actually believe its a strength.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just market homes or create content I create stories that people remember.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is proving that where you began does not determine your future.
Have the courage to reinvent yourself. It’s never too late! Keep going despite adversity and build something meaningful from the ground up while inspiring and helping others along their journeys too.
