Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexzundra Tillman.
Hi Alexzundra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like most directors before me, I have always wanted to be a storyteller. When I tell a story it often feels like I’m telling a secret, especially with ‘Gold in the Grave’. It’s myth making, which is what history is when you think about it.
I love stories and movies, they helped me through rough times and I hope that the art I make does the same thing for others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve started and stopped my film making journey a few times. I wanted to be an actor but that was too much of a long shot, then I wanted to be a pilot. I got my student flying license and applied to a pilot program but that fell through. Then I figured I should do what I’ve always wanted so I went to undergrad for film. But I didn’t have enough faith in myself and the program there to continue so I changed by major to Writing. It was a sidestep from film but I was told enough times that I needed to think about my prospects after school that it was a good compromise. I did try to direct one project after college but it was awful. I was really bad at it and that made me think I wasn’t capable, but I still wanted to do something in film. A friend and fellow classmate put me in touch with a mentor of hers, and she put me in contact with her friend who is a director/producer and I got the opportunity to work on a few professional sets. After a gentle nudge I committed to going to get my master’s in film and now I’m in it for the long haul.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a filmmaker. I write, direct, DP, and gaff. At my core I am a writer and I tell stories about women of color. My stories are known for their magical realism and world building.
I am most known for ‘Gold in the Grave’ the short film spec that I wrote and directed. It’s a story that I have been working on for a couple of years. From research, script writing, and rewriting its been a very interesting journey. We shot it in early April and we are in post production now. I’m so proud of this story.
I think what sets me apart is the experiences I’ve had. I’m about to be 30 and I’ve experienced life in a unique way and I think that comes out in my writing. After stepping away from a very religious upbringing I’ve gotten to fly planes, work in insurance, be unemployed. I’ve gone back to school twice and now I’m doing what I really want to do but I also know that whatever else I experience will just be more plot material.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Knowing what you like and what you don’t like makes a huge difference. Film making is highly emotional and you are your first audience and its all decision making. So have a strong foundation of what you like and understand what you don’t like and why. Get on a set and be tired and want to keep going. Make friends who will be tired with you and keep going.
