Check Out Colby Robison’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby Robison.

Hi Colby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a local at Cumming, GA for pretty much my entire life!

When I was in 3rd grade, I joined into a talent agency in Atlanta & began taking some acting lessons. I mostly remember about two short films and one feature I was in! None were much significant roles, but they were the ground roots of what would start my experience in my film career journey!

Right around the end of 8th grade towards my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I was catching that bug again for acting. This was around the time when daily vlogs were a bit of a trend around 2017–2018, so I decided to start a vlog channel as well on YouTube which ran for around 4 years before it settled down

Especially in 2017 was when I started exploring the “YouTube University” rabbit trail of binge-watching all sorts of videos & content on filmmaking basics & essentials like cinematography, lighting, editing, screenwriting, you name it. I then came across a channel called Tomorrow’s Filmmakers hosted by Justus McCranie, which was a online Christian film course covering all the foundational basics. I signed up for that course and joined the Facebook group, where I began meeting my first connections and now current friends I pursue this industry with! I also attended a cinema summer camp at Bob Jones University for two summers. I graduated as class of 2020 without a prom and on a church rooftop with a graduating class of just a dozen students from a hybrid Christian homeschool academy, then my freshman year of film school again at Bob Jones University.

Up to this point, my film journey was a fun hobby slowly transitioning into a career concept I really enjoyed! Alongside this journey was my faith, where I grew up in a strong Christian household with my dad serving as a chaplain in the army for 27 years. I knew my classic childhood Bible stories and all the elementary basics of “Jesus loves you and died on the Cross for your sins” and all, but it was January of 2018 when I happened to meet a group of homeschool guys my age having a weekly Bible study every Sunday at a local bakery. They instantly became my closest friends the first evening, and about 2 months later, I fully began my relationship with Jesus and my faith journey truly began.

Christmas break of freshman year of college, I had some unique opportunities where I had friends and knew of projects near my area in the faith-based industry I wasn’t fully able to do because of being a full-time student at film school. This season was where I really felt a tug from God telling me it was time for me to go home early. It was a leap of faith, but I dropped out to see where God wanted to lead me with my career.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been some obstacles during my journey. One of the main ones has been starting my journey from scratch, as I am pretty much a first-gen filmmaker from my family. It has been years of working different day jobs and projects to save up money to accumulate and invest in gear that gets the job done in the highest quality available, but I trust the financial momentum will build up eventually as I continue to pursue this journey and trust God in this calling I’m following.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s been five years since I last stepped foot on that college campus where I was taking my film classes. Currently I’m a producer, director, actor, and colorist specializing in faith-based and faith-adjacent narrative films. I have been blessed to have been able to work on a handful of features and shows so far, with now my production and color grading company Stainglass Entertainment currently in progress of being developed! I continually hope to pursue development of projects in my own state of Georgia and meet others that have stories looking forward to be told!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In this industry I’m in, it’s a common saying, but it couldn’t be anymore true of a statement— It’s about who you know. Whether it was friends I made along the way educationally from the online film course of college campus, or on the jobs themselves, or even making cold calls or sliding into Instagram DMs in the early days, those early connections have been investments of time and friendships that have developed into projects where they book me onto projects, or I get the opportunity to book them!

One other very easy way I’ve been able to meet likeminded others have been some faith-based film festivals I attend often, which include Christian Worldview Film Festival, International Christian Film Festival, and Content Conference at Capernaum Studios. The NRB convention is a much broader scope of Christian media, but I’ve had fantastic conversations and project pitches happen there as well!
