Today we’d like to introduce you to Davison Wheeler.
Hi Davison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got to where I am today because of trial and error. I started photography after coming on board as a hire at Best Buy in the Digital Imaging department, selling cameras right out of high school. Eventually buying a camera my self just to take good photos of a modified car I had since high school.
I didn’t take it as seriously till I decided to switch majors in college from a bachelors in history to going to one of the toughest trade schools in Ga and attending their Photography program. This program was known to start with about 70 students and as the two years progressed, finishing with no more than 20 just due to how hard it was.
Through a lot of personal hardships from 2011 to 2013 in that program, and almost deciding to drop out-if it weren’t for the director of the program convincing me to stay, I graduated and began my slow and I mean very slow process of growing my career and business in photography.
From 2013 to 2018 I mainly did photography in weddings with a shooting partner under the name “The Photo Collective Weddings”-shooting weddings all over Ga it was a fun time. But, after 2018- my photography journey took a different path into the fitness world.
I had gotten heavily into the fitness world, more specifically Crossfit and began helping get content for the gym I had begun going to. Slowly branching out to more more Gyms around the state, eventually photographing competitions, which lead me to what I considered a pivotal moment in that side of my career with fitness photography-being part of a media team at a competition called Pensacola Beach Brawl in my second home of Pensacola Florida. I have been part of that media team since 2021 and its become a big part of my journey as a photographer, especially in the fitness space.
While fitness photography is my main area of focus right now, having been trained in all aspects of photography, I still dive into other forms from time to time- Architectural photography being one of my favorite forms, along with editorial and product photography.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, the idea of being a photographer has definitely been a hard traveled road. I am by nature an introverted person so networking and growing my business in a “cold call” manner has been one of the hardest things for me to do. But, becoming part of the fitness community that I have become part of has allowed me to open up as a person and a photographer to grow my business to helping to tell the stories of people and their fitness journeys.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I stated in other questions briefly, My area of focus in photography has been fitness and telling the stories of people and their own fitness journeys. Whether that being helping business owners with growing their business, or an average gym goer going farther in their own fitness journey, or the athlete trying to get on the top step of that podium. Its taken me a while to get where I am now and I feel like it will be a while before I get where I honestly want to be and go but I keep going.
What matters most to you?
I suppose what matters most to me is not giving up on what I want, no matter how long it takes and how slow of a process it might be.
