Community Highlights: Meet Fatima Wasim of Enaya Counseling and Consulting (ECC)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Wasim.

Hi Fatima, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I, Fatima Wasim Phd. LPC CPCS HSP identify self as a Pakistani Muslim South Asian American Psychologist. Born in Pakistan, my journey to the United States during my mid-adolescent years was driven by the pursuit of enhanced opportunities. This transition presented a significant period of adjustment, yet my parents’ foresight provided more than just basic needs. They cultivated an enriching and stable environment that allowed me the space to adapt and ultimately thrive in a new culture. Despite the initial challenges of acculturation, I was determined to adjust and excel academically. My success was greatly supported by teachers and professors who not only encouraged me but also illuminated the professional path I would eventually choose. Crucially, I was also fortunate to develop diverse friendships and strong community connections, which significantly eased my social-emotional integration into American society.

My college experience was profoundly positive, both personally and professionally, made accessible through essential scholarships and unwavering parental support. Initially, I followed a pre-med track, but a transformative Abnormal Psychology course sparked a fundamental shift in my career aspirations. This pivotal moment led me to change my focus to Psychology, a decision made despite the cultural stigma often associated with mental health professions in my community.

The desire to promote connection and create safe healing spaces was solidified through volunteer work and employment at Raksha Inc., a non-profit dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence. This experience motivated me to pursue advanced education in the field, leading to a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Oklahoma State University. My extensive clinical training included a rigorous pre-doctoral internship at Duke University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and a post-doctoral fellowship at UNC-Wilmington. These experiences broadened my expertise, specifically in working with several populations especially college students, and provided invaluable experience in acute care settings, such as Ridgeview Hospital. Furthermore, my commitment to domestic violence survivors continued through professional work at another non profit organization Noor Family Services for survivors. Witnessing the profound resilience and courage of the women served by these organizations only intensified my dedication to creating therapeutic and healing environments.

Throughout my academic and early professional career, particularly during my Master’s studies, the dream of establishing my own mental health practice took root. I vividly recall interviewing as an early-career therapist at a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy-based practice that left a deep impression. The atmosphere of the office—its structure, the feeling of warmth, and the palpable sense of growth it embodied (down to a small, calming water fountain in the lobby)—became an aspirational blueprint. Even while employed elsewhere, the underlying goal was always to create a safe space for clients, especially women, where they could feel profoundly seen, heard, and whole.

During my education and training, I have had the rewarding experience of working with college students in various university counseling centers throughout the United States. Young adults possess a resilience and willingness to grow that I greatly admire. This population often faces the emergence of their first mental health issues, making help-seeking paramount. My passion for working with this group developed directly from these enriching experiences. Along the way, I was fortunate to meet wonderful mentors and supervisors with whom I am now in contact as colleagues. These experiences have allowed me to forge lifelong professional connections, and I value how each person has contributed profoundly to my learning.

My professional and personal mission became centered on two interconnected goals: fundamentally challenging and helping to break the mental health stigma within the South Asian community, and empowering adult women to live confidently and authentically, free from the constraints of relationship violence. This mission is actualized through a commitment to culturally specific, evidence-based care in my work as a psychologist. I maintain a deep passion for community education and believe that genuine, lasting healing is fostered within a safe, connected, and informed community.

This lifelong dedication culminated in the founding of my current private mental health practice, Enaya Counseling and Consulting LLC, in 2017. In 2025 I began an internship program for masters in counseling students and had my first intern in 2026. This year also marks the beginning of Women Wellness Retreats (launched 2026) in collaboration with other colleagues mentioned below.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The initial years following immigration to the US presented significant personal hardships, primarily the emotional distance from my extended family. The absence of my beloved grandparents, cousins, uncles, and aunts was a deep ache. To bridge this physical gap and maintain those crucial bonds, I relied on the simple, yet profound, act of communication. I would regularly write letters and send heartfelt cards, meticulously detailing my experiences and feelings. This not only helped me cope with the loneliness but also kept the family relationships vibrant. Furthermore, the dedication to educational and career goals meant that visiting my family overseas was impossible for several initial years, intensifying the feeling of separation. This early experience fostered a deep sense of resilience and the ability to maintain meaningful relationships across great distances.Navigating the Demands of Higher Education and Professional Training

The pursuit of advanced degrees and professional licensure was another complex mountain to climb. The decision to pursue higher education required moving away from my immediate family to a new state, necessitating the difficult task of establishing a new support system while simultaneously tackling a rigorous Ph.D. program. This phase involved intense periods of study, the high-stakes navigation of the internship match process, the nerve-wracking interview circuit, the successful completion of licensing examinations, and a continuous, conscious effort toward self-care to prevent burnout. This was immediately followed by a challenging out-of-state post-doctoral training experience, which further tested my adaptability and determination. Each of these steps demanded immense focus and personal sacrifice.Building a Private Practice Amidst Unforeseen Circumstances

Even as I prepared to launch my private practice—a long-held professional aspiration—I was met with unexpected adversity. During the critical planning and execution phase, I endured a series of significant family emergencies. These crises required my immediate attention and support, unfortunately impacting the original timeline and logistics for starting the practice. While these events temporarily slowed the momentum, my determination to establish a practice dedicated to mental health remained unshaken. I was committed to seeing the vision through, adapting my plans, and continuing to move forward with unwavering focus.

The Ultimate Professional Vision

Ultimately, my driving professional ambition is to expand my current private practice (Enaya Counseling and Consulting- https://www.enayacc.com/) into a comprehensive, holistic mental health group practice. This practice will be dedicated to serving the community by placing a strong emphasis on minority and women mental health, especially right here in my local area. I envision a center that not only provides exceptional clinical care but also fosters healing connection, cultural sensitivity and holistic services for all, especially women.

We’ve been impressed with Enaya Counseling and Consulting (ECC) , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ECC is a mental health private practice that provides culturally and linguistically appropriate psychotherapy services to college students and adults. Services are rendered in-person within Georgia and via telehealth in North Carolina, as well as other states (40+) authorized under PsyPact. The overarching objective is to develop into a comprehensive mental health group practice dedicated to serving minority populations, especially women’s mental health needs, with a specific emphasis on the local community.
As a core principle, I am a deeply compassionate and integrative mental health professional, driven by the profound mission of guiding individuals back to a connection with their authentic, most true selves and breaking the mental health stigma in our South Asian community. My professional lens is significantly enriched by my identity as a South Asian Muslim Psychologist. This personal insight grants me a rich, culturally specific knowledge and nuanced understanding of individuals from South Asia and those of the Islamic faith. To further facilitate therapeutic connection and access, I am proficient in both Urdu and Hindi. My primary population of focus and passion includes college students, adults across the lifespan, and women, offering specialized and relatable care.

My clinical expertise is concentrated in several key areas where I have dedicated extensive assessment and treatment experience. This includes providing compassionate support and intervention for survivors of interpersonal violence and abuse, addressing issues related to self-esteem, managing and treating anxiety and depression, improving stress management and coping mechanisms, and navigating complex life transitions.

Beyond traditional therapy, I extend my expertise to specialized psychological evaluations and curated psychoeducation (e.g. self care, mental health) workshops for nonprofit agencies in the community. I am equipped to provide the necessary psychological evaluation-based letters of support for VAWA (Violence Against Women’s Act)-related issues, playing a crucial role in the legal and immigration processes for survivors. Furthermore, I furnish detailed post-injury psychological evaluations/assessments—for instance, following a car accident—which are vital for insurance claims and determining the full scope of psychological impact.

My therapeutic approach is firmly rooted in an acceptance and mindfulness-based framework towards mental health treatment, promoting present moment awareness and values-driven action. I am clinically trained and highly proficient in two evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities: CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), which focuses on modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and cognitions, and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies alongside commitment and behavior-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. This blended and evidence-based approach ensures a comprehensive, flexible, and effective treatment experience tailored to each individual’s needs.

A Commitment to Holistic Healing and Authentic Well-being

As a highly compassionate, trauma-informed, and integrative mental health professional, my fundamental purpose is to guide individuals—particularly women—on a transformative journey to reclaim their authentic selves and establish deeply rooted, sustainable well-being. Through Enaya Counseling and Consulting, I employ a dynamic and collaborative therapeutic framework that seamlessly integrates established, evidence-based psychological methods with a holistic, culturally responsive, and person-centered approach.

My clinical practice is anchored by an unwavering foundation of unconditional positive regard, radical acceptance, and a deep, intentional focus on fostering genuine inner peace and profound self-compassion. I am dedicated to moving far beyond the superficial management of symptoms. Instead, I strive to cultivate a therapeutic space where clients feel profoundly seen, heard, and understood—a sanctuary that empowers them to explore their inner landscape, personal history, and relational patterns with newfound courage, boundless curiosity, and a sense of safety.

Specialized Expertise for Women’s Transitions

I specialize in providing tailored, expert support to women navigating the complexities of modern life. My areas of focus include chronic stress and burnout, debilitating anxiety, navigating identity development and self-definition issues, improving challenging interpersonal relationships, and managing significant life transitions (e.g., career changes, motherhood, divorce, grief). I honor the intricate and vital interplay between a client’s mental health, their relational dynamics, lifestyle choices, and their unique cultural and familial context, recognizing that true healing requires addressing the person as a whole, interconnected system. For example, recently I collaborated with a physician in NC to raise awareness about the role of hormones in women’s mental health through an online well attended webinar.

My work, whether within individual sessions, group workshops, or immersive retreats, is dedicated to cultivating meaningful, authentic experiences rooted in profound connection, genuine self-expression, and unshakeable self-compassion. My ultimate goal is to empower clients to navigate their lives, moving decisively from a state of overwhelm, self-doubt, and fear toward sustainable clarity, authentic self-trust, and enduring well-being.

My proudest achievement is the continued, unwavering commitment to the core of my professional and personal vision: destigmatizing mental illness, passionately promoting mental health and psycho-education, and actively encouraging help-seeking behavior. This dedication is particularly focused on, though not exclusive to, the often-underserved and high-stigma populations within the South Asian and Muslim communities. I believe that mental health care is a fundamental human right, not a luxury, and my work aims to dismantle the cultural and systemic barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the care they need. I strongly advocate for the vital importance of psychological wellness, viewing it as equally essential as physical health. I am humbled to offer culturally sensitive, evidence-based psychotherapy/counseling and assessment services to adults navigating life’s challenges. These services are available in-person in the Alpharetta/Roswell area and via telehealth across more than 40 states in the US.

My clinical and advocacy work is grounded in a deep conviction: true, profound healing is not about metamorphosis, abandoning one’s past, or becoming a new person. Rather, it is a brave and courageous voyage of rediscovering and reclaiming one’s authentic, intrinsic self.

I guide clients on this journey by facilitating a process that demands radical honesty, profound self-compassion, and the immense courage to face and integrate all aspects of one’s experience—including one’s shadow. My role is to serve as a compassionate and knowledgeable guide, empowering them to step back into their inherent wholeness.

Another recent achievement that I am incredibly proud of is significantly increasing my presence and resource sharing on professional social media platforms. I have leveraged these channels to raise essential awareness about prevalent mental health issues within our community, going beyond the traditional confines of the therapy room. This initiative represents a new and exciting frontier in my professional journey, allowing me to reach and positively impact a far wider audience than I could through individual counseling sessions alone.

This transition into becoming a mental health advocate and educator in the digital space has been a significant learning curve, requiring me to quickly adapt my communication strategies for a public audience while maintaining professional integrity. However, this challenge perfectly aligns with one of my five core personal and professional strengths: being an avid and dedicated learner. I wholeheartedly embrace new knowledge and skills, which is precisely why I relish this opportunity. I not only love to learn and evolve myself, but I also strive to promote and encourage this same spirit of continuous learning and growth in everyone I interact with, both in person and online.

The hallmark of my therapeutic approach is a commitment to therapeutic connection, authenticity, compassion, and competence. As a multilingual Muslim South Asian licensed psychologist and counselor, I strive to foster a caring and compassionate relationship—both with the self and with others. It is my profound pleasure and intrinsic satisfaction to witness clients move confidently toward their goals and values, achieving greater congruence and overall well-being.

Furthermore, my vision has also naturally extended into co-creating wellness and mental health retreats, like the “Reflect. Release. Realign Retreat 2026,” in collaboration with two other wellness and healing professionals (Omnia Abel-Gawad of Aspirations by Omnia and Mahitab Kamel of Wholeness Holistic Healing for Authentic Self). These programs offer women a space beyond traditional therapy to step away from daily pressures and experience deep reflection, emotional release, and meaningful connection. The retreats are fundamentally built on three intentions: authenticity, connection, and clarity, helping participants move from feelings of overwhelm and self-doubt toward self-trust and inner peace.

At Enaya Counseling and Consulting, I believe everyone’s mental health matters. My message to my clients is to “learn to feel Empowered to work through your life’s struggles by Navigating and Accessing Your Authentic Self!”

Our mind can be a beautiful place to be when we don’t separate it from our body and nurture it like we would our best friend. The color white of lotus represents honesty and authenticity to promote better mental well-being. The green color in the logo represents growth, harmony, balance, and security.
