Meet La’Kissa Britt of Uniquely You Lash Nail and Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to La’Kissa Britt.

La’Kissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Although I had always worked in corporate America from the age of 18, I could never get quite comfortable with it. I’ve always had a love of beauty, but it wasn’t until I came across eyelash extensions on Instagram that I found my niche. I watched for days and followed as many lash artist as I could possibly come across. It didn’t take me long to figure out that I wanted to take this class. In July of 2014, I took the class and realized that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be to actually learn the craft. But I made a conscious decision that I would not quit. I was fed up with my corporate job at the time and my husband and I decided to step out on faith. In September of 2014, I left my corporate job and took a job doing eyelash extensions in the middle of a hair salon floor.

I had no clients but I just continued to practice and put out flyers and a Groupon special. After a couple of months, the clients started to trickle in and that was the true birth of my business. I worked at the salon for months before being approached by a local business owner to work at a lash spa that she was opening. Needless to say, that didn’t work out and only lasted a couple of months. After that, I was determined to do this on my own. I went into a single room that I turned into a cute little room for lashing. I continued to grow my business and then made the decision to become a licensed esthetician. This was a great choice and has opened so many doors for my family and I.

I’ve met so many wonderful clients who have become some of my closest friends. I love being able to enhance the beauty of so many women by offering Eyelash Extensions. I have recently opened a full-service day spa in the beautiful city of McDonough, GA. offering everything from skin care, massages, natural nail care, tooth whitening and even Eyelash Extension Training Classes. This journey has not been easy at all. I’ve made both good and bad decisions at times but I’m pleased to say that I’m definitely proud of where I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been easy at all. Being an entrepreneur you have to continue business as usual even when life happens. There are no sick days or flex days in business ownership. So when my husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 it was a struggle taking care of him and also running a business at the same time. But I am grateful that I had a wonderful support system and we made it through. This was my biggest challenge thus far while being in business.

Also sacrificing time spent with family and learning to try and balance it all out. It’s been a struggle and true sacrifice of time when it comes to the people that matter most. There are at times other challenges within the business. Trying to find people that are the right fit, making financial sacrifices and time away from family, but I know that hard work pays off and at times we have to sacrifice now for a better tomorrow.

Teaching my son life lessons of sacrifice and patience as he has to watch me through this journey I feel with be worth all of the challenges I face.

At Uniquely You Lash Nail and Skin we offer Eyelash Extensions, massage, body contouring, tooth whitening, skin specific facials, body wraps, body waxing and body treatments. Natural nails and microblading are coming soon. We are truly a full-service day spa. We provide a clean relaxing atmosphere and we pride ourselves on customer service and taking care of everyone that enters our spa. We feel that this sets us apart from most other spas. We also offer Eyelash Extension Training.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely have those that have contributed to my success. First and foremost I give honor and glory to God because I would not have come this far without him. My Husband and Son have been my biggest supporters and have sacrificed so much of themselves in order for this business to succeed.

I am grateful for my parents who are always there to lend support and a helping hand when I’ve needed it. Thank you to each and every one of my clients who have supported me, been my cheerleaders, and who constantly tell me to keep pushing. It’s awesome to have clients that really want to see you succeed. Also special thanks to Kanitra Barrett, Denise Shephard and Charvetta Britt. They all have been a huge part of my success.

From stepping in when others didn’t show up to just being a listening ear or a prayer warrior. Thanks to Denise for taking the time to come in every Monday for weeks and help me to paint and decorate my spa. I appreciate these ladies so much.
