Conversations with the Inspiring Keya James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keya James.

In 2011, Keya, the founder of Tailored Beauty went natural. After doing research on healthy hair care practices and starting her “hair journey”, she made the decision to avoid relaxers.

She wanted to focus on retaining her length, so she used numerous products to keep her hair healthy & moisturized. She noticed that there were lots of products on the market, but the commercial products would contain lots of artificial ingredients causing her to question just how suitable it would for her “hair journey.”

In 2012, she started to make her own whipped Shea butter, which is now known as Everything Butter. She documented this entire journey through her YouTube account under the name Inez Moore. It took some time to perfect the ingredients, but once she did, she began giving it to all of her friends and family to try out.

Everyone loved the product, later that year, she became pregnant with her first child Summer James. She used Everything Butter on her stomach throughout her entire pregnancy; it resulted in no stretch marks! July 2013, Summer was born; by this time Keya knew how important it was to use ALL NATURAL products on her and her daughter’s hair. She only felt comfortable using the products that she made on Summer’s hair. Her videos on YouTube showed her audience just how effective the products were for her and her daughter’s hair. It created a demand for the products; her subscribers were persistent in requesting batches of the Everything Butter.

Late 2015, Keya along with her husband Aaron James started Tailored Beauty. Both Keya and Aaron hold degrees in Business from Virginia State University and Old Dominion University respectively. The success has come fast and the business is on a steady climb. They’re both excited about the future of Tailored Beauty.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. I am thankful for my husband/business partner Aaron James. He is very knowledgeable and we both understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Not only is it important to be self-aware but is important to trust the judgments of others based on your weaknesses. Allow others to take control while you grow in your weak areas. We have both learned through the years that communication and teamwork are the tools for our success.

What should we know about Tailored beauty? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started doing YouTube videos in 2010 as a hobby. Because of YouTube, it has been a great platform for me to educate others and introduce Tailored Beauty. I take pride in living a healthy lifestyle and being a mom. When I had my daughter, Summer, I really wanted to teach moms how to care for their children’s hair. I began creating products and showcasing them on YouTube. After perfecting my all-natural formulas, my husband and I started Tailored Beauty in 2014. I always listen to the feedback from my subscribers and customers. I noticed a lot of naturals don’t know where to start in their hair journey. We take pride in educating consumers on healthy hair practices and creating products to simplify your hair journey. Being a CEO takes a lot of time, but I truly love showing women my healthy hair care practices on my YouTube and teaching moms how to bond and care for their daughter’s hair on Youtube.

None. I really try to lead on my own.
