Today we’d like to introduce you to Lord Yatta.
Lord Yatta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The short version is, I moved here in 1987 from Rockford, Illinois. I was 16 and have been drawing since grade 3.
i had been enrolled in C.A.P.A a creative and performing arts program from grade 6 up to 12.
So, I’ve always been drawing. Fast forward to my 22nd year on this green and blue rock. I received my first tattoo of a design that I had drawn, at a place on North Highland. That’s when I knew I had to learn how to tattoo, then a year later I got an apprenticeship at the now historic West End Tattoo. In late 1994, I had begun to get paid for tattooing, so I quit my day job at Upper crust pizza. Now, I’m a full-time tattooer, this is the same time I started putting serious effort into my painting. In September of 1997, myself and three others opened up Vantage Pointe Studios, a custom tattoo shop & art gallery. Between then and now, I’ve been tattooing 20+ years and have been in many art exhibits, one at the High Museum and participated in tattoo conventions across the US. I’m currently a resident artist at Tri-Cities Tattoo and gallery in East Point Georgia.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are always challenges along the road. From people doubting your abilities, because of your color, or not understanding your passion or drive. I’m of the mind that my work ethic and work will speak for itself. I maintain a strong positive mental attitude and my goals will be achieved.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a visual artist I specialize in permanent electric tattooing (body art). I am also a painter and relief printmaker.
I’m mainly known for my tattooing here in Atlanta, my body art is recognizable for the clean lines, detail and smooth shading. With my painting, even though I’ve participated in many group art shows over the years. March 2017 marks my first solo art exhibit, “By My Hand” that was held at Gallery 992 in the Historic West End of Atlanta. My works are a combination of graphic design and fine art with a tribal influence.
I’m most proud of the relationship I’ve built with my clients and art community of the years, consistency, quality, and dependability I believe should be a cornerstone of any business model and just in life. A big part of being successful is based on the relationships you cultivate.
What sets me apart is, I am Lord Yatta a unique individual amongst a million other uniquely beautiful individuals on this planet, but only I can create what I do because it’s based on my influences, experiences and skill set.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do feel Atlanta is a great place for business, especially for the arts right now, there is a great opportunity for growth. This city is expanding literally by the day and that means beautification projects. For an artist starting out here, there is a wave new art galleries & creative spaces that provide more avenues for their creative endeavors.
