Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Lawson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started in music by playing drums in my father’s church when I was 14. That was in 1988.
A few years later, I got involved in the blues scene and played drums at every club I could find. It was great, but I felt I should be doing more with music, so I bought an electric piano and taught myself to play and sing.
That was when things really took off for me. I began to play gigs all over town and eventually started to write my own songs. I produced two EPs of original music and started to focus more on songwriting. I won some local contests and was really starting to get momentum with my music, but something was missing…
During a recording session in 2011, something very special happened. My producer brought in a string quartet to play some of my music and I was blown away. I have always been a fan of film and orchestral music, but never dreamed I could write it myself. But here I was, listening to one of my songs being played by an actual string choir.
Since then, I have been on a different path. I traded the noisy bars for the quiet hum of the hard drive and have been writing and producing film and orchestral music for the past several years. I hope to one day conduct a live orchestra playing my own music and also score a major film.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been easy for me. I have no formal training in music, so everything I have learned is self-taught. Engineering and producing my own music have both been very challenging, but more than that I would say that orchestration is probably the most difficult thing I have ever tried to learn.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Restless Enigma Music story. Tell us more about the business.
I write custom music for visual media – film, TV or video games. I can write in many genres, but I specialize in writing traditional orchestral music. My favorite composers are guys like James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Michael Kamen and of course John Williams. I would like to think my music sounds like a blend of my influences.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I like the quote, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
To that end, I cannot control when the next opportunity will come, but I CAN control whether or not I am prepared. I have done my best to learn my craft so I am ready when the right opportunity knocks.
