Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio. As a kid, I was always in church and there is where I was introduced to music. Rhythm chose me at a young age and we were inseparable. I joined a drill team and ended up creating most of the steps performed at some of the biggest parades and competitions.
I graduated from The Cleveland School of Arts and then hit a ceiling in my hometown in my twenties and wanted to perform for bigger artists on bigger stages. I relocated to Atl with just $500.00 and a hotel key. Now I travel and perform with some of the biggest names here in Atlanta
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Leaving everything familiar was the biggest struggle. Family, friends and promising work will cripple you if you aren’t mentally strong enough to take risks.
MzDrummer – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a professional female musician, musical director and instructor. I stand out because there are very few women who can perform just as well as the men and look good doing it. I am most proud of the fact that I have created my own lane here.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being in control of my work schedule, my compensation and having consistent work.
