Meet Matt Boyd of Matt Boyd Photography in North Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Boyd.

Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My wife Meredith and I started as a team in 2005. She is an award-winning professional hair and makeup artist for commercial television, and she started her pageant career in Miss Georgia (Miss America system) as a preliminary winner in 1997 as Miss Northwest Georgia, she later won Mrs. Georgia United States in 2003 (4th runner-up to Mrs. United States) and Mrs. Georgia International in 2008 (1st runner-up to Mrs. International).

My career at the time was in law enforcement leading the detective division of a police department in metro Atlanta and also a graphic designer. Meredith bought me my first camera, and I attended classes at the Art Institute of Atlanta for the technical aspects of photography. With Meredith’s experience and love for pageants and fashion modeling, Matt Boyd Photography was born.

Together as a husband and wife team, we started traveling across the country shooting pageant headshots, actor headshots, model portfolios, commercial images and business headshots, it is wonderful to not only have her as my partner in our professional business, but also a partner for life. She’s enabled me to unearth a passion for something I never thought was even possible.

I later retired from law enforcement as deputy chief of police and enjoy traveling and meeting people all across the country with Meredith, and I truly love what we do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have worked with the Miss America organization and other pageant systems for over a decade. It’s an incredible honor to have established steadfast relationships with local and state volunteers across the country as well as been a small part of countless titleholders journeys to the crown as they pursue their goals and dreams, we are grateful for each and every one of them and proud to call them a friend.

It all started when we began shooting for a magazine called, “Supermodels Unlimited” for several years as their staff fashion photographer and was offered the opportunity to shoot a 10-page editorial spread of the newly crowned Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008 while she was on her whirlwind media tour in New York City. We packed our bags and headed to the big apple for what we hoped would be the biggest opportunity of our lives.

The day was filled with over a dozen avant-guard fashion looks from an NYC fashion stylist and Meredith did all the hair and makeup. The set was in a four-story historic building in Manhattan, we photographed Kirsten from the ballroom, fire escape and even on the rooftop – very editorial. It all started from one fashion shoot, one chance and we are so glad we took the leap of faith.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Matt Boyd Photography – what should we know?
At Matt Boyd Photography, we tailor every shoot to align with the pageant program that the client is competing in or for the modeling agency the actor or model is signed with. If it’s business and professional headshots the client is looking for we can cater to environmental looks, business casual to dressy business.

So if it’s for the Miss America Organization, we suggest a modern style that can be used for speaking engagements to promote sponsors and for social initiatives for the client and also relatable casual looks that translate into an empowered, confident young woman that captures her unique sense of style. And if her sense of style is is edgier, we most definitely cater to that as well.

We can photograph and coordinate the wardrobe for the shoot to the client’s preference to match their personality. For Miss USA or Miss Universe, we focus on showcasing the client’s modeling ability as many clients want to pursue modeling and acting as a career as well as shooting stunning facial beauty shots featuring their strongest facial features.

For commercial and corporate business looks we can handle photographing a company’s entire staff or key management members on location or at our 3,500 square foot studio in North Atlanta. Depending on the style of the business, we can help them match their image for the business’ branding strategy so everything is seamless for marketing purposes.

If the client wants super clean, natural makeup and hair, softly understated wardrobe and little to no jewelry we’re all for it. For actor headshots and modeling portfolios we strive to align with the style of the agency so we can take a look to the supernatural to avant-garde fashionista. The key is listening to the client, meeting their expectations and then exceeding them.

It’s all about matching the right look for the right job the client is striving to achieve. We’ve been coined as the “dream team” by clients across the country, and we always say that the client is the most important part of making the vision a reality, “it takes teamwork to make the dream work.”

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We wouldn’t be where we are today without the steadfast support of my wife, Meredith Boyd; she saw the raw talent I had and always believed in me. Meredith consistently thinks outside the box, forges partnerships and fosters relationships with clients creating friendships we treasure greatly.
