Meet A’Shontay Hubbard of Christian Omeshun in Fayetteville

Today we’d like to introduce you to A’Shontay Hubbard.

A’Shontay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I can remember as a child being so uncomfortable with a lot of the clothing options because I simply did not fit in. I was tall and full figured… which at the time felt like a double whammy…not only was it hard to find clothes that were fit and fashionable. It was also hard to find clothing that was long enough. Well about five years ago after aggressively trying to climb the corporate ladder in Fashion for Walmart, I still noticed a lack of modern, sophisticated options for plus sized women – particularly if they were tall. The options found in stores were often cookie cutter, generic, and had an unflattering fit. As a plus size woman with a flare for fashion, I found this simply unacceptable and set out to create a custom clothing line for the woman who wanted more. I knew that I possessed the skills and I had a bright idea that I would start sewing for the everyday woman. So just like that… I bought a sewing machine and created a small sewing area in my one bedroom apt. Before social media became what it is today, I would ask my family and friends to share my post so that I Could try to get the word out. Eventually, it caught the attention of Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista and I got my first blog post as a brand. With this type of attention, I knew I would have to step my game up and get intentional with my goals for Christian Omeshun because the only way was up from here… Fast forward to now, we are still thriving and going strong as ever.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been a mixture of both. I think entrepreneurship is a very unique journey. You often find the blessing in the lesson. For a long time, I struggled with working a 9-5 while trying to run a business. Eventually, it became too much and I had to make a choice. So I set out a plan to quit and eventually I did. No matter how long I prepped for this moment, It still was a huge leap of faith. I had to jump. The next big obstacle I faced was moving into an actual studio. I didn’t know how I was gonna do it but I knew that my business and clientele had grown and there was no way I could continue to work from home.. so in due time I moved into a production studio space. Notice I said in “Due time.” You can’t rush the process. Timing is everything. Now many of my efforts are put into contracting help in select areas and building a solid production team. I’ve had to learn the hard way that you can’t do everything yourself. You have to outsource in the areas that you are weak. Each year we’ve gotten better and stronger. Consistency is the key. You can’t throw in the towel because things get tough. You’ve got to find the blessing in the lesson and act accordingly.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Christian Omeshun – what should we know?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family and partner have been huge attributes to the success I have today. They often show up when needed and don’t ask questions. They root for me big time and are not afraid to lend a hand when needed. It takes a village.

My clients and customers are the reason why I thrive. Their patronage keeps me in business. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.

My tribe of women who keep me grounded, motivated, and disciplined. There is nothing like the support of another woman. Everyone needs accountability partners.

Most importantly God. Faith has kept me through this journey. There are days when I want to throw in the towel and certainly days when I’m unsure, flustered, and over it but I have to trust and believe that this journey is mine. I was made for this. None of this is my doing along. I didn’t get here by myself. This has been a humbling process.
