Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanrae’ Price.
Shanrae’, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am an Indie Gospel Artist that’s been singing my entire life. I am the eldest sister of the R & B Artist Kelly Price. I sang background for Pop Artist Mariah Carey from 1992-1996. Which also led to me to sing on platforms as well as recordings with other iconic artists such as, Luther Vandross, P. Diddy, Gloria Estefan, Tonya Blount, Boys 2 Men, Jermaine Dupree, the late Old Dirty Bastard, Buster Rhymes, Jay-Z, Lil. Kim, Fozzy Brown, Total, The locs, Carl Thomas and the list goes on and on.
While I was traveling and singing, I was growing my own family. Newly married and carrying my three babies throughout my career became challenging. After my third baby, I made the decision to pause my career and dedicate my time to raising my babies. It was a difficult decision to make being on top of my career, but I came to realize that my family was my priority and that as the children got older, I can come back to my singing career.
Presently, all of my children are all grown up, and I made the decision to start my singing career once again but this time singing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am currently promoting my newly released album titled “Long Time Coming” which came out January of this year. I have been blessed to not only be nominated for a couple of awards this but have been named and awarded the 2018 New Gospel Artist of the year via the Radio and Records Awards. I am excited to share my gift with the world once again as doors continue to open for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
Initially, the obstacles I faced were people in the industry overlooking my talent due to my life-size frame. The early 1990’s didn’t readily welcome a talented large frame singer. But, as I progressed in the industry people began to accept my physical stature because they respected my talent.
It was even more challenging when I made the decision to pause my career to raise my babies due to the financial transition. I was still singing but working in churches that didn’t have a large budget to place me on salary, therefore, I always worked two jobs along with raising my children.
Now that my children are grown up. The new challenge has been re-establishing my name and talent in the music industry that has changed a great deal these past twenty plus years. Starting out as an Indie artist is financially taxing due to you being your own financial backer. Then you must find a unique marketing and promotional strategy to introduce your music to the world. But through it all, the journey is exciting, and I am up for the ride.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Duree Music Ministry is my company which is a Non-Profit business. Myself and my family are all musicians and vocalist, and we sing/minister through music at charitable events. We also give our own charitable concerts partnering with other non-profit organizations to aid in specific causes.
What I am most proud of is that my immediate family and I all work together. My husband is my producer and bandleader. Our eldest son sings, plays and works with us on the business end of our company. Our second eldest son is our drum player, and our youngest child and only daughter manage the inventory/sales of our products (music Cd’s & T-shirts) during our concerts.
Our nieces and nephews sing and play in our band too. So although I paused my career to raise my children, the benefit is that we all sing and play together now. I feel that my band which is also my family sets us apart from most artist. Our music is diverse, not the traditional choir sound but a variety of traditional Gospel mixed with rap, Reggae, Quartet sound with some R & B ballets.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I see my music reaching the world the next five to ten years. Expanding into producer and other great ventures which will introduce up and coming artist into the music industry. I see clothes and cosmetic lines trending in the next five years.
I also see talk shows with me being the talk show host within the next five years. I see my name “Shanrae'” being a household name in the next five to ten years.
