Meet Decatur Hair Stylist: Tyiesha Braxton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyiesha Braxton.

Tyiesha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was in middle school I’ve always loved doing hair. I started out doing some of my friends and classmates hair while in high school and working in a salon sweeping hair and answering the phones after school. I wanted to pursue a career as a hair stylist after graduating but during that time I stayed in a small military town called Hinesville, GA and didn’t have daily transportation to travel to the surrounding cities to attend cosmetology school. I was also a teenage mother at 17 so the best option for me was to detour my dreams of doing hair and enlisted in the US Army. I joined the military and once I decided to end my enlistment I got a federal job. In 2012 the federal government shutdown due to the budget not being signed by Congress. During the time of the government shutdown, I realized my federal job was no longer my security blanket and I needed a backup plan so I decided to go back to school and get my license in cosmetology. Once becoming a licensed hair stylist an opportunity was brought to me where I did hair for a magazine landing me my first gig doing hair for a celebrity client. That one experience has opened up more opportunities where I’ve been blessed to work on several music videos for major artists in the industry, magazine print, and some commercials. I’m loving my journey, this experience as a whole and letting my daughters and others see and know that life may throw you a curve but it’s never too late and you’re never too old to follow your passion and dreams.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing you really want is ever smooth sailing but you have to continue to push through your obstacles. Some struggles I still face today is juggling between family life, my federal job and becoming one of Atlanta’s elite hair stylist. Finding balance to do it all is my daily struggle.

What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
Ms. Kay Clark, the owner of Kay Clark Casting has played a very important role with me providing hair services for some of the hottest music videos that are filmed here in Atlanta. She has opened up a door which has allowed me to be part of some of the most amazing projects.

What kind of work do you look forward to most?
My dream, of course, would be providing hair services for Beyoncé one day. I mean come on Queen B! Her hair is always so amazing, what stylist wouldn’t want an opportunity to work with her. Oprah and Michelle Obama are also high on my list for future clients! Claiming it lol

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
Nothing! My story was written in the way its supposed to be played. I wouldn’t change a single thing because all the lessons and hardships I’ve experienced is what makes me the strong person that I am today!
