Alexu$ (Big Lex) Alexus Long of Birmingham on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Alexu$ (Big Lex) Alexus Long shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Alexus, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. When was the last time you felt true joy?
Recently I’ve felt the most joy I’ve ever experienced in life. Being patient, trusting the process and loving on me. I’m not exactly where I want to be but I’m further than I’ve ever been. Not just financially but mentally & spiritually. And that in itself brings me so much peace & joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I am Alexu$ also known as Alexus the rapper. A multi talented singer, rapper, model & licensed cosmetologist. While music and modeling is my passion I am also in the business of creating & making others feel beautiful. My sound & music is my story, I speak from experience and from a vulnerable and unapologetic place in which others can relate to. I like to think that the confidence I exemplify inspires others to feel the same about themselves. Lately I have been modeling, networking and working towards visuals for current and upcoming music. Working on a new and improved sound that will display the woman I’ve grown to be. For most of my art has been about me being heartless and a hard body, A soft girl era has taken place and I’m just enjoying & growing in it as well.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandparents have always seen the light in me before I could. I grew up feeling as though I could do anything because of the confidence they had instilled in me and my future. It set high stakes for me but I’ve always been open and ready for a challenge to raise and set the bar. Even though some of them have left this world the love and push they instilled in me is something that keeps me striving and continuing on.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
My grandfather always said “with every adversity comes a greater opportunity “ I didn’t truly understand that saying till I began to see the beauty in struggle and suffering. Counting my blessings and taking my L’s as lessons. I started out to making music for myself but once others heard I realized how much they could relate to me and my story. I didn’t realize that pouring my pain into my music would help others feel like they had someone they could relate to. Which gave me a push and charge to turn that pain and hurt into power.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
My faith to trust and believe that all things will work for the greater good. I don’t always speak loudly on it, but I pride myself in knowing that when things aren’t working in my favor that with my faith and trusting in the lord things will work out for me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, which is something I already live by. While i’m grateful for those who support me, I’ve never really needed any validation. Which can to some sound vague or vain but I truly am confident in myself and all things I create & do. Never rushed for a spot in anything because I’m sure that what’s for me will always make room for me. No need to belittle or compete when I know who I can and will be. The praise feels amazing but being able to be true to myself without needing approval or validation is a feeling I can’t explain. But it feels great.
