An Inspired Chat with James Scott Jr of Atlanta

We’re looking forward to introducing you to James Scott Jr . Check out our conversation below.

Good morning James, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is waking up 3 or 4am walking my dogs, getting ready to head out for work. My first maintenance call is at about 6-7am it can be anywhere from a simple water change, adjustment of levels, changing filters, cleaning glass, feeding fish or corals. The second stop is pond maintenance to delivering fish or emergency calls. Third stop could be aquarium transport service to another room, or another city to another state. It could be a four stop day or a ten stop day, one or two calls a day up to ten.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is James Scott Jr. owner of Aquatic Wonders a fish aquarium and pond maintenance business. I travel all over Georgia Alabama, Tennessee & Florida picking up aquariums and servicing customers. I’ve been in business for over 14 years I’m constantly learning and building my resume to expand my brand. I strive to be great and I want to have something I can look back on in life to say I built it.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a warehouse manager for a company for 7 years, I was a great asset to the company. I performed my job better than my boss( his words to be exact). They fired my boss and gave the job to another manager they wanted me to train so he can be my manager. I was working late one night and I had gotten hurt, I went to the emergency room my ankle swollen so bad I couldn’t wear a shoe. The whole time I was out of work my boss was calling me telling me he left work for me and when I’d be back. Not once did he ask was I ok, I went to physical therapy to get clearance and they didn’t clear me. I called to inform him and not once did he ask was I ok just only what work would be waiting for me when I went back to work. I was running my business 8 years part time hanging onto a job that didn’t care about me. I hired myself and never looked back, the best decision I’ve ever made.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
You should always be confident and believe in yourself, never let anyone have control over your life or make you feel like you’re stuck. If there’s something you want to do in life go for it don’t wait, you never know if you’ll have another opportunity.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
One person I’d like to admire is my dad James Scott Sr. He works very hard and has maintained the same positive spirit. No matter what I’ve never seen my father sad or defeated, he’s always in good spirits. My father never lets negative energy around him, he always tackles everything full throttle. That’s the person I’m trying to be like, my dad showed me he’s Superman.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My customers would miss the convenience, I have a lot of spoiled customers lol. Some customers I have keys and alarm codes I go service their home or business early mornings or late nights. Some of my customers work so much, I have customers that I never met only talked to one the phone. I have a few celebrity customers that love my work but they are always traveling our schedules never align on maintenance day. My customers would really miss my convenience I try to make sure everyone is taken care of and pleased with my service.
