Jaymar Jackson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Jaymar, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently finished the manuscript for book 2! It was so fulfilling and this time it took me much less time than the first book! I am really excited to get it out there but this time I am really taking my time to publish this one. Very proud of it and I cant wait for people to experience it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Jaymar Jackson, and I am a Self-Published Author. My series Celestial Elementals is about six young black adults who must band together to harness their elemental powers and restore balance to the Universe.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That everything has to be one way. Once you venture out into the world and view more perspectives and gain a bit more empathy for others, you learn to apply that empathy for yourself, too. We’re always taught to color within the lines and stick to a particular path, but life and people do not truly work that way, and it’s a way to keep people small for a specific benefit.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
It was about embracing all the parts of me that society, and even people you know, tell you to lock away for the sake of their own comfort. I think people are so adverse to change because it’s unknown, it’s new, and it’s scary. Embracing your fears and facing them is the best way to grow. I took my pain and used it to connect with others, and I do so through my writing. I want more people to feel seen, heard, and understood.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Invalidating others’ emotions for the sake of their own. If you don’t understand someone or something, I think it’s ok to misunderstand someone, but trying to invalidate their feelings or dismissing their concerns for the sake of your own or “logic” is lame HAHAHA. Please learn some empathy; please learn to relate how you feel to how someone else might be feeling. It’s a tool people need to embrace more often than not, especially in the world we live in today. We need more tolerance and empathy.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Working! AHAHAHA! No, but seriously, it would be work that doesn’t fulfill me. I would do all I could to make the legacy I want to leave on this earth come to pass. I want people to know that you can change, that you can find people who love and respect you, that you can be the hero in your own story, and you alone have the power to make the life you want and deserve.
