We’re looking forward to introducing you to Karo Duro. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Karo, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
What makes me lose track of time is immersing myself in creative brainstorming and exploration, allowing myself the space for personal world-building. I give myself the freedom to explore my ideas without boundaries, even if they never see the light of day. Whether I’m creating a new visual art piece, designing a 3D virtual world, or writing an article, when I’m fully submerged by a concept, hours vanish.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Karo Duro, and I am an Artist and Technologist. I craft immersive art installations, visuals, and virtual worlds. My approach takes shape in multiple forms: from surreal art pieces exhibited in traditional gallery settings to my experiential works that blend installation art with visual design, storytelling, UI/UX design, and extended reality (VR/AR). An aspect of my work also involves writing creative articles unpacking the rapid advancements of technology and the impacts on society. Through these various modes of expression, I explore a myriad of themes through an analytical yet phantasmagorical lens.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I mentioned earlier how I enjoy getting absorbed by my creative process and pour into my work and what intrigues me. As a deeply passionate person, I’ve learned how best to work with this passion. Recently I have found myself ensuring that I find time to rest and take a moment to pause. Often that means not always saying yes to everything in order to fully dedicate energy and vision to a particular project or cause.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say “Thank you for believing in yourself and moving toward the things that inspired you.”
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Some people think things aren’t that deep. I think we live in a time where we’re so overstimulated and our media is so oversaturated with noise that a lot of us are getting fatigued. Sometimes that fatigue can lead us to not pay attention as much to the world around us, creating an underlying sense of apathy. It can leave us hopeless enough that we allow certain things to happen or turn a blind eye, adopting an “it is what it is” mentality about where we are as a society. The truth is, it is that deep. I feel like it’s important for us to be as proactive and steadfast about enacting change as those who came before us.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I think because of the way society has been structured, along with other factors like familial upbringing and especially social media’s ability to grant us instant praise in the form of a like, we have become so wired to crave praise and recognition. My partner always says “Live by the cheers and die by the boos,” and that has stuck with me for years. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting acknowledgment, but it can become a double-edged sword. I recently read a book titled “Courage to be Disliked” by Ichiro Kishimi
and Fumitake Koga that explained that when we get easily moved by or addicted to praise, it means we can react just as strongly in the opposite direction when the praise is no longer there and sentiments are not in our favor. I thought that was very profound. This is why I believe in giving your best shot, no matter how big or small, no matter who is looking, and no matter what perceived benefits you may reap. That way, when you encounter occasions where you may not get you the praise you deserve, you are not easily moved.
