Ketorrie Chatman-Ballenger shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Ketorrie, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’m currently pregnant with my first child and to know that I am creating something so little inside me brings me so much joy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ketorrie Chatman-Ballenger, and I am a private chef and the proud owner of Kee’s Eatery & Co., which I have been running since 2018. I specialize in soul food, seafood, and just about any dish my clients request—I believe in bringing their culinary visions to life. I cater small parties, private dinners, and special events, offering personalized, flavorful experiences. Cooking is more than just a job for me—it’s my passion. Without it, I truly believe life would be dull.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would say my husband. He saw me clearly before I ever truly saw myself. He always believed in me, motivated me, and constantly hyped me up—whether it was about how talented I am at what I do, the kind of person I am, or just reminding me to never give up. His support has been a constant light, especially on the days when I doubted myself.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Some of the defining wounds of my life have been overcoming sexual assault, bullying, deep insecurities, and personal hardships. These experiences left marks on me, but they also shaped who I am today. I’ve worked through the pain by leaning into prayer, going to therapy, having the hard conversations—even when it hurt—and trusting God every step of the way. Healing hasn’t always been easy, but my faith and determination have kept me grounded, especially during the toughest moments.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is family, faith, and making people feel loved through my cooking. They know I’m someone who shows up for the people I care about, that I take my relationship with God seriously, and that I put my heart into everything I create—especially in the kitchen. They’d also say I value honesty, loyalty, and creating a peaceful, uplifting environment wherever I go.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, I could—and I do. I’ve learned that true passion and purpose come from within, not from outside validation. Of course, praise feels good, but it’s not what drives me. I give my best because it’s a reflection of who I am and what I believe in. Whether it’s in my work, my relationships, or my growth, I show up fully because I know my effort honors my calling, my values, and the blessings God has given me.
