Today we’d like to introduce you to DaQuain (D.Q.) Watts.
DaQuain, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Being left-handed, I have always gravitated towards arts. My teachers would always comment on my “beautiful handwriting” every year. I have been doing art and playing basketball throughout all my school years. After taking my first Graphic Design class in high school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do if basketball didn’t work out. I started college playing basketball at a university in Ohio, and then transferred to Georgia State where I will be graduating in May 2019.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As a graphic designer, I am able to bring other people’s visions to life. As an artist, I am able to express myself with thing that I feel that either empower, motivate, or simply interest me. My artwork usually comes as a random idea and then I write down every idea with a brief description of what I saw. So now, I have a huge list full of art ideas in my Notes app. Most of the notes are ideas that I want to try for myself, and the others are thing that I want to use for my graphic design brand. I hope people take away from my art that anything is possible when you put in the work for it, and basketball taught me that, so I have now been applying that to art.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I feel like artists have a desire to be known for what they make/made. So as far as success, if someone can look at something that I have done and they can say, “Oh DQ made that!”, then I have done my job. Success is also stability and positive progression with your work. To be successful as an artist, you have to be willing to be a sponge and learn as much as you can and channel that into your work. You also have to have a work ethic and strive to make yourself better everyday.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Right now people can see my work on Instagram: @theycallme_dq. This is the fastest way I can get my art up right now. I also have a Behance account: https://www.behance.net/dqwatts. I am working on my website right now (dqwatts.com), which should be up and running by May 2019.
