Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsie Mellott.
Kelsie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always had a love for baking, but it really set in when I became a mom in 2013. My husband and I decided it best for me to become a stay at home mom when our first daughter was born. I was, of course, that first-time mom wanting everything homemade fresh food from scratch, you name it. I would make cookies, pies, and cakes for family friends just to pass the time of the what seemed such long days. It wasn’t long after I got my first order for a themed birthday cake, I’ll tell you this much, I spent way more on the supplies to decorate and bake it than I sold it for, but it turned out nearly perfect and I wanted to design more. I then decided to launch my business as a certified independent baker. Literally, starting from the bottom, doing hours and hours of research to learn how to craft everything, all of these different techniques and supplies needed. I’ve come a long way in such a short time. Clientele started coming in, filling up my planner some months out of the year, then attending the My Unreal Wedding Expo in Grovetown, GA helped me gain even more clientele, by only March of 2018, I was booked for the entire year. My work has been featured in many photo shoots around the area by various photographers. I must say working with the event planners for the photo shoots is one of my favorite things to do as it gives me a lot of artistic freedom to come up with something original for the theme of the shoot. I’m always looking for ways to improve my business, but I am very pleased with how far it has come.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a cake artist. I really enjoy making celebration cakes, that being wedding cakes, grooms cakes, birthday cakes, really anything that calls for a celebration! It is just fun to me, I love seeing everyone smile and awe at how beautiful or artistic the cake is. I use my clients for inspiration, what speaks out to them and make it come to life. I hope people see the cakes as a piece of art. Everything is handcrafted and made from scratch with care and a lot of time. I could throw the cake together but to make it the best it can be, to make it absolutely perfect, it takes time and precise measurements.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success is not measured by the number of followers or money brought it, success is how the piece of work came out. If the cake came out perfect with taste and looks then that is a success. Being a baker and cake artist you really need to have a passion for it, love everything about it. patience is key.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
