Art & Life with Michele Stancil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Stancil.

Michele, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I always enjoyed art and creative projects as a child. I was fortunate to have exceptional art teachers from elementary school through high school. I did not become serious about becoming an artist until college. I felt drawn to the art department and graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in studio art. After college, I worked for an art consulting firm and then in PR at an art museum before becoming a full time working artist. For 14 years, I have specialized in architectural renderings and in recent years abstract paintings on canvas and paper as well.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I have always loved architecture and design. Because of this, my first love is watercolor architectural renderings. Great design is so inspiring for me and I have always been drawn to painting beautiful homes and buildings. Some artists are drawn to portraiture, for me, it is buildings! My watercolor renderings are very detailed and time-consuming… in direct contrast to the renderings, I absolutely love working in the abstract. Abstract paintings on canvas and paper are a much-needed break from the detailed renderings I love. When painting in the abstract, I am attracted to light, beautiful color and the vibrant world around me. I paint what I love to look at.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My best advice is to educate yourself on the business side of selling art! I have found that clients come back to me again and again for commissions because I am professional, never miss a deadline and am committed to my clients being completely happy with the product I create for them. It is not enough to be creative and talented. You also have to be extremely dependable in order to be a successful working artist.
