Today we’d like to introduce you to Keana Brewster.
Hi Keana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always drawn or painted to preoccupy my mind ever since I was little. My mom always kept some type of arts or crafts around so that was always my go-to. She and others noticed I had a talent but to me, it was always just a hobby. My mom tried to get me to go to the school of fine arts but I didn’t want them to waste money on me because it was super expensive to apply. I didn’t think I was creative enough or good enough and didn’t want to disappoint anyone. I dumped dreams of being an architect or fashion designer for hopes of becoming a nurse. As much as I loved that idea, let’s just say that wasn’t it for me either.
Then I turned to HR (Human Resources) and eventually got the degree but I must of missed some steps along the process because I couldn’t get the job! Not feeling fulfilled or finding “success” in my field really hurt. Through all of this, I was still practicing art and experimenting with different techniques each year. This all worked in my favor when I realized I could no longer continue working jobs that didn’t fulfill my purpose. I was mentally, physically and spiritually ill. I had done what I felt like others thought I should do instead of listening to myself, but no longer. This is when I began focusing on creating KB’sArt.co
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the biggest struggles along this journey have been struggles with self. Self-doubt, self-discovery, self-love, self-care, you name it ! Art has been my favorite therapist. Art therapy has helped me get through every phase in life through self-expression. I’m a very emotional and passionate person. That can be a great thing and a bad thing if you get to focused on results or too attached. I’ve had to learn to not take everything literally and go with the ride and I use that same concept when creating new art! It’s a lesson that never gets old, which is to let go and just express yourself!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If we’re technical, I specialize in abstract expressionist art. I’m known for paint parties, paint kits and sensual art. I like art that makes you feel. I put my emotions onto the canvas and let them decide what I should create. I’m most proud of the growth I’ve gained through living my passion out loud. By unapologetically being myself and choosing to express it as I see best is what sets me apart. Not everyone can do what I do exactly how I do it and I mean that in the most humble way. No one can do what you do exactly how you do it. We’re all already unique we just simply must be.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Oh baby, we’re going BIG BIG do you hear me?! KB’sArt.co is so much more than just custom art. It’s about self-care, self-awareness, healing, and expressing yourself! Everyday we have a duty to stay true to ourselves and I want everyone to experience that freedom. Freedom from conforming. We’re all creatives, in which we all have the ability to create. No one can do what you do exactly how you do it so do you boo!
