Today we’d like to introduce you to KZ.
KZ, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is Keith Zadig, but I go by KZ. I was born in Mountain View, CA and lived there until I was about six years old. We moved to Johns Creek, GA for my dad’s job and I spent the majority of my life there. Growing up, I spent a lot time making random videos around my house. Every day after school, I would make videos of Halo 2 and post them on the internet. After spending too many hours indoors, I decided to pick up my razor scooter. Scootering became my biggest passion and I began uploading videos to YouTube throughout high school. Thousands of people started watching my videos and it was a lot to handle because I didn’t know what I was doing. I decided to stop making videos and go to college.
I majored in communication with a minor in Spanish at Kennesaw State University. I remember one day at university feeling like I really needed an outlet to get through some things. Music was always a part of my life, but it wasn’t something I really gave my full attention. I felt like it was time to take it seriously so my brother Scotty Z and I got to work.
When we started releasing music in college, I felt like I had to impress people. This ended up making me pretty unhappy and I needed to make a change. I realized that I needed to strengthen my faith and make music from my heart. It’s been uphill ever since then.
It might sound like we do music full-time but we don’t. Scotty Z is an Environmental Engineer and I produce videos for one of the fastest growing technology companies in North America. I owe a lot of my creative success, business endeavors, and mindset to my day job. Shout out SalesLoft.
Scotty Z and I have recorded/produced a plethora of songs over the past year in 2018. We’ve headlined shows in Los Angeles and Atlanta while working real jobs. It’s been really cool meeting our listeners and they are the reason why we do this. We just hit 1 million streams on our song ‘Nobody’ last week. The people are listening to what we have to say and relating to our positive message. We don’t plan to ever stop.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Scotty Z and I would categorize our genre as a melting pop of wavy sounds. We are inspired by electronic, hip-hop, and moody sounds. We are very experimental and honestly make whatever we’re feeling. All of our production usually starts with a piano or guitar loop and then we add the drums.
The reason why I make music is to help others see the light. I’m very vulnerable in my music and discuss topics that are very close to my heart. I want all of my listeners to know that they can do whatever they want in life. Scotty Z and I make everything in my tiny apartment and our music is reaching people all over the world.
The thing is, we are in no rush to ‘blow up’ or ‘make it big’. That isn’t the goal here. The goal is to make the music we want to make and let God do the rest. I will say this though… we are going to tour the entire U.S and Europe one day so shout all of the fans we have right now. That’s me speaking into existence 🙂
Aside from music, I own a company called ‘It’s wavy’ and finally got it trademarked (that took like a year lol). We do exclusive merchandise drops every season. My goal with its wavy is to build a community of rad people that uplift one another and chase dreams.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice for other artists is to just create and don’t think too much about it. We live in the social media era and it’s very easy to compare yourself to others with Instagram, twitter, etc. It’s important to realize that there is only one of you in the world and nobody is like you.
Make your own wave and don’t be afraid to try new things. If you fail that’s okay but don’t ever give up. Incredible things take time and you have to make sure you enjoy the journey.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My music is available on every single music platform. Just type ‘KZ’ on Spotify and add some music to your playlist! I’m always on insta @kzwavy too. I’m also going to be uploading my new podcast and lots of YouTube videos in 2019. So, make sure you subscribe to http://youtube.com/keithzadig.
